Bong Joon-ho (of “Parasite” fame)’s next film, based on Edward Ashton’s sci-fi novel “Mickey 7” (yes, not “Mickey 17”), is set for 2022, but we’re still Waiting to watch. Now, it’s been delayed again and pushed to spring 2025.

Online buzz surrounding the film surged after the first trailer was released in September, prompting Warner Bros. to once again reconsider its approach to the theatrical release of its long-awaited project. Now it will open April 18, 2025approximately three months after the last January 31 period.

In part, the idea is to highlight it as a serious contender for the late 2024 awards season, with a March 29, 2024 release date that will hopefully lead to an Oscar nomination (and maybe even a win) in early 2025. The competition is now being considered for next year, prioritizing theatrical releases in “early summer” (Hollywood terminology) to capitalize on the film’s potential blockbuster advantage. Even though it appears to be character-driven, it also looks like a sci-fi adventure with a healthy dose of comedy, and Robert Pattinson once again lends his sassy voice.

Variety explained in its report: “The new dates allow the film to be screened on IMAX and hopefully attract audiences during the Easter holiday.” Although “Mickey 17” failed to win the same title as “Godzilla x King Kong, but Warner Bros. has been doing well during the spring as of late, so it may try to replicate that success next year before moving on to something bigger. The hitters arrive during an extremely crowded period in the mid-summer 2025 season.

It’s also worth pointing out that director Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” was “originally slated for an April 18 release, requiring IMAX and premium big-screen screenings.” Lionsgate seemed bullish on its awards chances, pushing the awards date to October 3, with Warner Bros. quickly snapping up the award earlier this week. As always (if you’ve been paying attention), Hollywood studio release schedules are often defined by what their competitors do or don’t do.

Mickey 17 is a sci-fi thriller starring Pattinson as an expendable employee named Mickey Barnes who is sent on a dangerous mission to colonize the icy planet Niflheim . When a Mickey dies, a replica is created to replace him that retains most of his memories. Fuck it, right? The cast also includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo, among others.
