Did you know that the basilisks from “Harry Potter” have a weakness that can defeat them? This is extremely amusing, almost laughable.

Weekly until Christmas: The “Harry Potter” films are returning to free TV! The broadcast of all parts begins in late autumn. Here you can find all the broadcast dates of the “Harry Potter” series!

In “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) has to fight a basilisk. Because the basilisk’s skin is armored and spells bounce off it, Harry can’t simply defeat the giant snake with a spell. Only with the help of the Gryffindor sword does he succeed.

However, there would have been an easier way if Harry had researched basilisks beforehand. As powerful as the magical creature may be, it has a weakness, just as Superman has his kryptonite…

The cry of a rooster kills basilisks

It may sound absurd, but the mighty basilisk has an almost laughable weakness: the cry of a rooster. A cock’s crow is said to ensure that a basilisk who hears it dies immediately. This is also the reason why Ginny kills Hagrid’s roosters under the control of Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

This scene only exists in the books and was cut from the films. However, according to actress Bonnie Wright, the scene was filmed. Remnants can be found in a scene from the Extended Edition in which Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) comes out of Dumbledore’s (Richard Harris) office with a dead rooster in his hand and meets Harry.
