The idea of a portable Xbox console has been around for a while, and it’s not hard to see why. With the success of devices like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, it makes sense that Microsoft would want to join the party.
Although there is no official announcement yet, Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming gave an idea of the company’s plans in this regard.
The Xbox laptop would still be waiting
In a recent interview with BloombergSpencer acknowledged that “We are expected to do something.” in the portable space. This suggests that Microsoft is serious about the idea of creating a portable gaming device and that the first steps in this regard are already underway. In fact, Spencer confirmed that prototypes are in progressalthough there is still a lot of work to be done before such a device is ready for commercialization.
Long term, I like that we’re building devices and think our team could do some really innovative work, but we want to be informed by learning and what’s happening now.
Interestingly, earlier this year, Spencer was reluctant to talk about Microsoft’s plans for a possible Xbox handheld console. At the time, he said there was “nonothing to announce” in this sense. However, soon after, information was published that the company was prototyping ideas for a native Xbox handheld device. This suggests that Microsoft has been working on this project for some time, although there are still a lot of unknowns about its plans.
The question is, What form will this Xbox handheld take? Will it be a stand-alone deviceable to run Xbox games without needing an internet connection? Or will it be more an add-on for the Xbox consoleallowing gamers to play cloud games anywhere?
As for the chronology, Spencer said an Xbox handheld device would still be ready for release in a few years.. This suggests that Microsoft is taking a careful and methodical approach to the development of this device, which is understandable given the complexity of the project. However, it’s clear that the company is committed to the idea of creating a portable Xbox device and is willing to invest the time and resources necessary to make it a reality.
