Arcane will end after two seasons, but after some rumors surfaced that the show would last five seasons, the creators of League of Legends have clarified that fact.
Earlier this year, to the surprise and dismay of many fans, Netflix announced that Arcana’s second season would also be its final. This is mostly because Riot Games had some broader plans for an animated version of the League of Legends universe, but regardless, some rumors started circulating that Arcane was supposed to have five seasons. An article was posted on Reddit regarding comments from Marc Merrill, creator of League of Legends and co-founder of Riot, but why Arcane ended after two seasons. In response to the article, the developer issued its own comment, explaining that the show “was always written to be two seasons.”

“What caused the confusion was that there was a budget conversation going on internally about ‘approval for 5 seasons,’ which simply meant that we were setting aside a chunk of money for heavy development that had absolutely nothing to do with Arcane Creative,” Merrill continued said (it’s worth noting that the show’s total budget, including advertising, reportedly cost $250 million, which may be part of some rumors outside of Merrill’s explanation). “For Riot and our team, creativity and creating great things are always a priority.

“We’ve also always envisioned telling more stories and continuing to expand the universe. That’s never changed – people are just interested in rumors or misleading headlines, and Riot doesn’t correct them – but given the nature of those rumors Momentum is building, and we’d love to clarify that just because that’s our intention, doesn’t mean it’s easy or that we can churn out these things like a factory. Just like it’s really hard to make games that are worth players’ time/love, it’s also hard to tell great stories and make incredible shows/movies (especially when we’re building it from scratch for the first time).”
So, no, Arcana was never intended to be five seasons, even if there were discussions about the budget. Despite this, our own Connor loved season two and found it basically impossible to stop watching.
