The Pixel brand has managed to become one of the most popular in the smartphone sector, but this is only the beginning; Google has already launched the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Buds to expand the brand beyond mobile phones, and now, according to two new leaks, it’s preparing another major milestone.
And Google is reportedly about to completely change its strategy in the laptop sector, with the potential to change Chrome OS forever. We know this thanks to two separate leaks published within hours of each other, indicating that Google could have already launched these plans.
To start, Android titles revealed the next Google Pixel laptopa new laptop from the brand which will clearly target the “premium” sector. It will therefore be very different from most Chromebooks, which are geared more towards the low and mid-range, especially for students and users who do not need a system as complete and complex as Windows 11. Last year, Google introduced the Chromebook Plus. , which sought to offer a higher quality experience at a higher price.
The Google Pixel Laptop would go even further than the Chromebook Plus, with premium construction with high-quality materials and performance to match, although no details about its “hardware” have been revealed. This isn’t the first time the Pixel name has been used on a laptop; The Chromebook Pixel was an experiment that launched over a decade ago and evolved with the Pixelbook. However, two years ago, Google closed its computer division following the lack of success of these devices; Its high price was not its only weak point, since the use of Chrome OS was seen more as a disadvantage than an advantage.
Google doesn’t want to repeat history, and that’s where the second leak comes in: Chrome OS will disappear as we know it
According to the leak, Google is working on a multi-year project to convert Chrome OS to Android; It would therefore not be a new operating system resulting from the merger between the two, but Android would receive the technologies and innovations of Chrome OS to better adapt to devices such as computers. Remember that Chrome OS is already capable of running Android applications, and this would be a change in the opposite direction: that Android would receive the functions of Chrome OS.
The result will be a version of Android that can run on computers and tablets, with a better interface than the one it currently has; The objective would be to achieve parity between the two systems, i.e. Android can do the same thing as Chrome OS. And in this case, Chrome OS would no longer be necessary.
The new Android would be available on the Google Pixel Laptop, but it would also be used on the upcoming Pixel Tablet 2 for improve productivity and multitasking. It would have everything a computer system needs, like advanced keyboard and mouse support, an external monitor with multiple desktops, and much more.
Google thus wants to directly confront Apple’s MacBook and Microsoft’s Surface, but also improve tablet sales compared to the iPad, since the Pixel tablet would benefit a lot from it productivity improvements. The big question is when all this will happen, since the Pixel Laptop launch date still remains a mystery.
