Red One’s box office results weren’t exactly impressive considering its massive budget, but thanks to Prime Video, that wasn’t a problem for Amazon.
According to “Variety”, “Red One” made $34 million at the domestic box office in its first weekend, which is negligible compared to the $250 million box office. The current international box office is about $84 million, which is obviously not enough. “The production cost is estimated at $250 million,” said David A. Gross, who runs the film consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “That’s a lot of money for a Santa Claus story.” It wasn’t a disaster, but not enough to combat the fact that a movie like this shouldn’t cost more than $150 million before marketing and distribution.”

Amazon is also clearly waiting to see how things play out, with Amazon-MGM’s head of theatrical distribution Kevin Wilson saying, “We’ll have to see how this impacts the holidays. We have serious competition behind us… It’s not What a secret.” “But we offer something slightly different than those movies. “What’s the difference?” High quality video. Amazon seems to believe that even if the movie doesn’t do spectacularly at the box office, it’s still a good way to get people talking about it before its Prime Video release.
“Whether people like it or not, the value of these movies to our business model is different,” Wilson added. “If we can release these movies in theaters and cover our P&A [print and advertising] Cost, why wouldn’t we? We’re running a massive marketing campaign that’s paying for the movie before it even starts streaming. ”
We still don’t have concrete numbers for streaming shows and movies, so unless, as Variety points out, Red One gets some sort of sequel, it might be impossible to tell whether putting so much money into a movie is just for the sake of it The box office flop was actually worth it.
Red One doesn’t yet have a streaming release date, so if you’re one of the many people who doesn’t mind seeing it in theaters, you’ll have to hold off.
