The second part of the remake of the seventh part of the Final Fantasy series is already a few months old and the conclusion of the trilogy will probably take a while to come – actually the perfect time for a DLC! But nothing will come of it, as game director Naoki Hamaguchi now reveals.
After the first part of the trilogy was released in 2021, Square Enix decided to create a DLC that revolved around Yuffi Kisaragi as a new playable character and also brought with it some graphical improvements. In contrast, the second part will probably remain the main game.
Game director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed the background to this in an interview with the British Daily Star.
“We definitely do hear the desire from fans, the voices out there that want that kind of thing, I understand it completely, but I think, from my perspective, what the fans really want to see the most is not necessarily DLC. They want to see the third part of the series as quickly as possible. So that’s why we’ve decided not to focus the development resources on creating additional extra episodes for DLC at the moment. We really are putting all our efforts into getting the third game out as quickly as we can. So for the moment, that’s where we’re focusing our time.”
So Square Enix has weighed up whether fans would rather have DLC for Part 2 or would prefer to get their hands on Part 3 more quickly. Therefore there is no DLC. It would be better to put all resources into developing the grand finale of the trilogy.
But that doesn't stop Final Fantasy Rebirth from winning a lot of prizes. Yesterday's Golden Joystick Awards featured awards for Best Soundtrack and Best Storytelling. In addition, Cody Christian and Briana White, the actors of Cloud and Aerith, were named Best Lead Performer and Best Supporting Performer. At the Game Awards, among other nominations, it could theoretically even be enough for Game of the Year, although this decision already seems to have been made thanks to the controversial new regulations.
But it's nice that Sqare is fully committed to the third part of the remake series, but they haven't yet wanted to reveal an exact release period.
