Join people like Metroid 2, Kirby's dreamland, Link's Awakeningand countless other fantastic Game Boy games, Nintendo Switch Online's retro catalog now includes another classic: Donkey Kong Land. It is nominally a Game Boy adaptation of Donkey Kong Country for the SNES, but the game actually has a slightly different story, changes to the enemies, and some entire levels not included country.
The main reason why I love Donkey Kong Land – and while we are here, Donkey Kong Land 2 And 3– which will likely be coming to Nintendo Switch Online soon as these retro games keep coming – is the way the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack was adapted for the Game Boy's sound chip. The new arrangements of these classic catchy songs are very impressive; You can get a taste of the sound in the attached trailer Nintendo's contribution to X announces the game's addition to Switch Online. No shade to the SNES, but I just prefer the sound of the Game Boy. I used to pause this game just to listen to certain tracks.
The original Donkey Kong Country trilogy is also already available on Nintendo Switch Online, so you can really dive deep into the DK catalog if that's your thing. These games hold up quite well considering they're from the '90s.
