Christmas is just around the corner and what better way to prepare the ground than with some curiosities from one of the most iconic films of these dates. I am actually talking about The Grinch from 2000, directed by Ron Howard (Apollo 13 and Solo: A Star Wars Story) and starring Jim Carrey himself… although it was somewhat difficult to recognize him under so much makeup.
It was almost 10 years ago that the actor revealed that he was on the verge of abandoning the filming of The Grinch after the first day. He did it in several interviews, but in this case we will stick to his words on The Graham Norton Show. She said that the first makeup session alone lasted eight and a half hours… and that she repeated this process up to 100 more times throughout the filming.
Carrey told Howard he couldn't do the movie after the first session. And what was the team's solution? Hire a CIA torture instructor to give him advice on how to get through these sessions and the filming of The Grinch in general. Not everyone knows that it was very overwhelming for the actor, despite the specialist's advice. These ranged from relaxing with television to hitting one's leg to relieve tension.
“This is how I survived The Grinch,” he says in the interview. But it doesn't end there, because the fact that the character looks so great is not just a merit of the makeup. Did you know that the character's iconic smile is not a special effect or a mask? He demonstrated it several times in interviews. It was him, forcing his face to acquire that cloudy but at the same time funny smile. And repeating that over and over again didn't have to be pleasant in the long run.
