The Sniper Elite shooter series should have had a battle royale spin-off, but according to a new report, that won't happen anymore.
The Sniper Elite shooter series has been successful on the market for many years and is also holding its own in the competitive genre. A few months ago, Rebellion announced the next step for the franchise: Sniper Elite was supposed to conquer the battle royale genre – with its own title, which was previously known as Project Archipelago.
Now comes the sad news: This game, also known internally as Sniper Island, will no longer be released. According to a new insider report, the team-based battle royale title that would have pitted teams of three against each other has been scrapped. The last alpha tests were previously completed around mid-August 2024.
According to the usually well-informed and well-connected Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, Project Archipelago was subsequently canceled because Tencent decided it no longer wanted to finance the game. According to the title, the financing was reportedly canceled by Firewalk Studios in view of the disastrous flop of Concord. As a result, Tencent critically examined some of its own projects and drew conclusions.
The battle royale offshoot has been controversial in the community surrounding the game since it was announced. Rebellion had to listen to some criticism as to why they were now switching from previous single-player games to a battle royale title. This issue now seems to have been settled elsewhere.
Pleasing: Despite the discontinuation of the project, no employees were laid off; these could each be assigned to other projects, including Sniper Elite: Resistance, which represents the next main installment in the franchise.
