Those still using Windows 7 and 8 and avidly playing Steam games may want to consider eventually upgrading.

When it comes to software these days, everything eventually comes to an end. This is especially true for operating systems, and it's no surprise that companies like Microsoft and Apple don't want to continue supporting systems that most people no longer use. This also applies to software developers that have been around for years, including Valve, which has been publishing games through Steam since the Windows XP days. Back in January, Valve announced that official support for Windows 7 and 8 was officially ending, meaning that Steam Support would not be able to provide any technical support for issues users might encounter on these operating systems.

Now (PC Gamer reports), 11 months later, the first Steam update has arrived, and Windows 7 and 8 users won't be able to download it. “This version of the Steam client will no longer run on Windows 7 or Windows 8,” the update post reads. “Users of these operating system versions will not automatically update to this new version of the Steam client.” Apparently, There are many reasons why people use Windows 7 or 8, computers are obviously quite expensive and not everyone can afford to upgrade, but it's a decision that makes sense – the October Steam Hardware Survey found that only 0.29% of people Choose to use Windows 7 or 8. Users are still using Windows 7.

Interestingly, the report found that no one uses Windows 8 at all anymore, but that's a good thing because Windows 8 is absolutely terrible. It's surprising that it took Valve so long to call for the end of support, especially with more and more people moving to Windows 11 (Microsoft's latest operating system), but hey, these things sometimes take time.
