A recent Windows 11 update appears to have caused some Ubisoft games to become unplayable, including Star Wars: Desperados.

You know, computers are kind of annoying, aren't they? We rely on them a lot, but one day, a small update might break something for no apparent reason. While playing video games isn't the most pressing issue, the recent Windows 11 update has caused some pain for Ubisoft gamers as, for one reason or another, some of these games are unplayable. Players started noticing that they were unable to play several Ubisoft games since last week's Windows 11 update, and now Microsoft has admitted that the update is affecting the aforementioned games, and that the problem isn't just your device.

“After installing Windows 11 version 24H2, you may experience issues with some Ubisoft games,” a Microsoft post explains. “These games may become unresponsive during startup, loading, or active gameplay. In some cases, users may experience a black screen.” Microsoft even conveniently confirmed which games are affected, including: Assassin Creed: Valhalla, Assassin's Creed: Origins, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Star Wars: Outlaws, and Avatar: Pandora's Frontier.

Microsoft goes on to explain that in order to “protect your Windows Update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on devices with these games installed. These devices will not have Windows 11 version 24H2 installed through the Windows Update release channel… We recommend that you resolve Prior to this issue, do not attempt to manually update to version 24H2 using the Windows 11 Setup Assistant or Media Creation Tool.”

In the meantime, Ubisoft has rolled out at least a temporary fix for the issue, though it did note that “you may experience some performance issues while we work on a more permanent fix. We'll let you know once it's ready.” For now, it's best to put these games down, I'm sure your backlog will be enough to fill the gap.
