A whole bunch of Oculus VR headsets were allegedly stolen by a group of men who waited for truck drivers to exit their vehicles to get something to eat or use the bathroom, then got in and drove them away.
As recently reported by 404 media And Court guardSix men have been charged for allegedly stealing semi-trucks containing expensive items such as underwear, ATVs and high-end tech hardware. According to court documentsThe men reportedly committed these crimes throughout the United States, including in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Indiana.
The thieves would stake out distribution facilities and then follow the semi-trucks to a gas station or rest stop. As soon as the driver left to refuel, rest or go to the bathroom, the men stole the entire semi-truck and drove off with the goods, trailer and all. The men then allegedly hitched the stolen trailer to their own semi-truck and abandoned it.
On May 6, 2022, in Louisville, Kentucky, two of the six co-conspirators found a truck filled with Meta Oculus virtual reality headsets valued at approximately $1.5 million. The two men allegedly stole the valuable truck from a truck stop in Indiana and then drove it to Vanderburgh County, where they parked the tractor-trailer and drove away with the trailer.
According to the indictment, the men often painted over logos and/or identification numbers on the stolen trailer and used different license plates to conceal the trailer's identity and avoid detection by law enforcement. The group wasn't just targeting Meta. They are alleged to have stolen trucks containing hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of products from various companies, including Microsoft, Sony, Logitech, JBL and Bose.
The indictment says the group took most of their stolen goods and sold them to a buyer in Florida for “a fraction of the retail value of the stolen cargo.”
