While Helldivers 2 was showered with great accolades, the studio took the opportunity to send an important message to its peers in a video game industry that is in crisis.
The studio behind one of the biggest video game successes of the year, Helldivers 2, was able to share its vision of the current crisis in the video game industry during the Golden Joystick Awards. During this ceremony, the title won four awards and could well win more at the 2024 Game Awards. This could have served as a platform for a call to save democracy and the industry.
The Helldivers 2 studio wants to mobilize the troops to save the industry
Helldivers 2 was released on February 8, 2024 and has become one of the biggest hits of the beginning of the year. A stunning first start, but has since run out of steam a bit. This is mainly due to updates that are of little interest to players and, above all, the enormous controversy surrounding the requirement to have a PSN account to play, even on the PC. Even though Sony has since reversed this decision, most of the damage has been done.
Regardless, Helldivers 2 was showered with awards at the 2024 Golden Joystick Awards and is nominated in four categories at the Game Awards. A developer from his studio used the ceremony in collaboration with the Futures Games Show to send a message to his colleagues in the video game industry. “ Today, the video game industry is in an alarming state. It is very important to take the time to appreciate the games that are released. These ceremonies are an incredible event. But we must be aware that the industry is in danger and we must be there to help each other ».
Let's remember that between 2023 and 2024, more than 11,000 people lost their jobs and many studios were closed because a particular game failed commercially, but not only that. Even Insomniac Games was affected after the great success of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 . The same observation applies to Tango Gameworks (before it was revived by Krafton, the group behind PUBG), although its latest gem won Hi-Fi RUSH Awards. Unfortunately, if Arrowhead Games got between the bullets thanks to the success of Helldivers 2, many didn't have that chance. Hopefully, 2025 will be kinder to the video game industry as a whole.
