2024 was a successful year for OLED monitor manufacturers. With growth of around 181 percent, sales figures have exploded; Of course, some new displays and trends can also be expected for the coming year.

In the past few days, several leaks and rumors have emerged about which areas the focus of monitor development is currently, which we will summarize for you below.

Trend 1: 500 Hertz as the new high

When it comes to refresh rates, OLED manufacturers currently only seem to know one direction: up. After the first 240 Hz monitors with 4K resolution were introduced this year, which even managed to reach 480 Hertz in 1080p resolution thanks to dual mode, this maximum value is now set to be cracked.

According to a report by the South Korean portal ETNews, Samsung is responsible for this and is working on the development of a new QD-OLED panel.

  • This should have a whopping 500 Hertz refresh rate. In contrast to the example mentioned, this frequency should not be used at Full HD resolution, but at 2,560 x 1440 pixels.
  • According to the report, the development status is currently in a final phase; Commercialization via various large monitor manufacturers is being discussed. The first half of 2025 is mentioned as a possible publication period.

Trend 2: 4K resolution is finding its way into 27-inchers

4K resolution on 27-inch OLED monitors is somewhat of a rarity; only two displays currently use such a combination – probably also because the 1440p resolution has established itself in the community as the “sweet spot” for this screen size.

  • Next year, the first panel manufacturers will probably aim to switch to 4K resolution at 27 inches.
  • These include the Chinese brand “Light Soul”, which plans to bring QD-OLED monitors of this size with 4K resolution, 240 Hertz refresh rate and a maximum brightness of 1,000 cd/m² onto the market next year. Other manufacturers could follow.
  • In the “OLED_Gaming” subreddit, however, the discussion is no longer about the specifications of the screen, but rather the associated connections: DisplayPort 1.4 is insufficient for a monitor of this type.

Trend 3: 45 inch ultrawide with LG panel

The ultrawide fans among you will also receive options with higher resolutions – but initially only in the 45-inch category.

Common resolutions of this size currently generally rely on a 1440p vertical; The only differences in this aspect are between UWQHD with 3,440 pixels and DQHD with 5,120 pixels.

A report from TFTCentral According to LG, they are now working on a new WOLED panel that will provide a nominal upgrade to 1440p resolution.

As a result, the upcoming 45-inch panel will have a resolution of 5,120 x 2,160 pixels. One of the first screens with such a configuration could be the one recently found in databases (via DisplaySpecifications) appeared LG 45GX950A.

  • This monitor will probably be presented at CES 2025; However, there is no information about the price, release or other specifications in the database entry.
  • The TFTCentral report is certain that LG will rely on the new RGWB subpixel structure next year, which is already used in current 32-inch monitors and promises improved text readability.
  • In addition, given the high resolution, the monitor would probably have to have DisplayPort 2.1 and thus address one of the previously mentioned criticisms from the OLED community.
