Marvel's new Ultimate universe will add a new ongoing series starting in January 2025, and what's coming is too powerful to pass up: Chris Condon and artist Alessandro Cappuccio reimagine Wolverine as the Winter Soldier in Ultimate Wolverineand they are not going to have any kind of subtlety when it comes to introducing it, letting it loose and letting it unleash its barbarism from the first issue.
What is this about Wolverine from the new Ultimate universe? After its own event, the House of Ideas released the Maker (a terrible variant of Mr. Fantastic) who, with no one to stop him, took the opportunity to mold an entire universe to his liking and convenience. As a result, Peter Parker has had a quiet life – like other heroes – while other characters have divided up the planet at the Maker's convenience to create a new world order. A boring little corner of the Marvel Multiverse? At all.
Since 2024, Marvel Comics worldwide and Panini in Europe have presented their own Ultimate versions of Spider-Man, Black Panther or the fans. The superb Peach Momoko has reimagined the mutant series as a manga starring Hisako Ichiki and set in Japan in Ultimate X-Menbut the further we get into the stories, the more they channel what we already knew with a different point.
Thus, almost a year later, it is time to make presentations with Wolverine again. Or, rather, with the Ultimate version of the Winter Soldier: tied in short by the corresponding versions in this universe of Magik, Colossus and Omega Red, this wild variant of the clawed Marvel icon is presented to us as the Maker's most lethal asset. However, from the beginning they let us know that they may have some problems keeping it under control.
The first number of Ultimate Wolverine (which, we presume, will be called Ultimate Wolverine in Europe) will take the opportunity to show for the first time many characters associated with the X-Men franchise. Some had already appeared before, for the record, like Storm in Ultimate Black Panther or the Armor itself, but it will be interesting to see Wolverine's new dynamics with Nightcrawler and Mystique who seem to only share the bluish skin color with respect to those we already know.
For their part, those currently responsible for the series are clear about their objective: to take the ideas that we all have about Wolverine “to the limit” to create the definitive version of it. And it cannot be denied that intermixing some ideas from the Weapon X stage with the premises of the Winter Soldier that we all know can work very well.
Regarding publication plans, the first issue will arrive in the United States on January 15, 2025, offering no less than six alternative covers to celebrate this launch. But if you can't wait until then you'll be happy to know that a special prelude story will be released in December with the first issue of Ultimate Universe: One Year In starting December 12.
Those of us who love Superhero comics are experiencing a kind of renaissance of the great icons of the largest publishing houses, and if the Absolute versions of Batman or Superman are an example of how to turn around what we knew about DC and be brutal, The reimagining of Wolverine for Marvel's Ultimate universe cannot and should not be left behind.
