Nintendo in China, it's the beginning of the end
Nintendo announced news that could upset Chinese gamersS. By 2026, the Nintendo Switch eShop and all related online services will be closed in China. This decision, communicated by Tencent, Nintendo's partner in the country, will mark the end of an era for console fans in this market.
The eShop closure will begin on March 31, 2026. From this date onwards, purchasing digital games or software in the online shop is no longer possible. A few weeks later, on May 15, 2026, it will become even more legalN. Players will no longer be able to download games and DLCs or redeem download codes. All online services linked to the switch will then be permanently switched off.
Free games to ease the transition
To limit players' disappointment, Nintendo has planned a special offer. From November 27, 2024 to March 31, 2026, Switch owners with an active WeChat account can download up to four games from a diverse list for free.
Among the titles offered we find classics such as:

- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
- Super Mario Party

Other games, like Dr. Kawashima's Brain Exercises are also aimed at those looking for a lighter or more educational experience. An initiative that could definitely alleviate the frustration of the affected players.
Why this decision?
China is a special market for the video game industry. Although it is huge, it is also heavily regulated. Local laws impose strict restrictions on game content, distribution and consumption. For Nintendo, maintaining its services in such an environment is a major challenge. Furthermore, the Nintendo Switch, released in 2017, is nearing the end of its life cycle.
