You may not have heard of Death of Summer Light, but I think the first trailer will have you adding it to your Netflix watch list.

I'm not sure if slice-of-life and horror are two genres you'd typically find mixed together, but that's exactly what Death by Summer Light is. This particular manga, which has been serialized since 2021 and is still releasing new chapters today, follows the daily lives of Yoshiki and Hikaru living in a small Japanese town – but one day, Hikaru dies and is replaced by some horrible people. Yoshiki doesn't know what to do when he learns that his true best friend has died. It's a creepy concept, and after a long wait, the first trailer for the animated adaptation is here, and it's as ominous as you'd hope.

You can check out the trailer above, which doesn't show much, but at least it resonates. Ryohei Takeshita, best known for “Jellyfish Can't Swim at Night,” serves as director of the animated adaptation. Chiaki Kobayashi, who starred in Hellraiser and Renatis, plays Yoshiki in Light, and Shuichiro Umeda (Zom 100: Bucket List, Final Fantasy 7 Reborn) He plays his opponent.

Takeshita said in a statement, “It was exciting to read the original work and think about how to express its frames in the anime. Our team was very dedicated to capturing the subtle emotions of Yoshiki and Hikaru, as well as the beautiful and innovative structure of the manga. We Looking forward to sharing it with you.”

Unfortunately, while the show is expected to air in the second half of 2025, there's currently no release date, so at least you won't have to wait that long.
