What an end to the year we are experiencing regarding AI: Apple Intelligence already implemented in English and a few months after its arrival in Spanish. ChatGPT as a reference and Google's Gemini arrives on iPhone. Could anyone else join the party? Well yes. Because we can all use Grok for free, the boldest AI on the market from Elon Musk.
We can finally say goodbye to subscriptions to be able to use Grok. Elon Musk has decided to open up his artificial intelligence and now any X user can access it from their iPhone. The new version (Grok) promises to be different from anything we've tried so farwith amazing features like Aurora: its revolutionary image generator.
The only thing you need to get started is an X account
Getting started with Grok is surprisingly simple. All you need is an X account (free) and the application installed on your iPhone. No hardware requirements like with Apple Intelligence, which makes it compatible with virtually all current iPhones, whether it's an iPhone 16 or an iPhone X.
The first time you log in, you'll see a notice about the accuracy of your answers and data usage, but then you can start chatting directly from the Grok section of the side menu. You will also find Grok on the X site if you are browsing from your Mac.
Grok is not a typical AI. It's a mix between a virtual assistant, someone with whom you can have natural conversations with humor, generate texts, consult the news and analyze files. And the best: Their responses tend to be more informal and direct. than those of other AIs. It is under X, its objective is not to help you in your work like ChatGPT.
Aurora is the image generator that revolutionizes
The most impressive thing about Grok 2 is undoubtedly Aurora, its built-in image generator. And this is where Elon Musk makes the difference: while other AIs impose limits on the generation of celebrity images, Aurora leaves alone. The result is spectacular: X is filled with ultra-realistic photos of celebrities that could pass for authentic photo shoots.
With Aurora you can generate high quality photorealistic images, create images of famous people without restrictions and apply different artistic styles. You can also use reference images to create variations. Each generated image has a small Grok logo in the lower right corner to identify it. The technology behind Aurora is fascinating: use a template “expert mix” which distributes tasks between several specialized sub-models. This is no longer the Black Forest Labs feed they previously used, but rather xAI's own development.
Grok is completely free and with very few limitations
In the free version, you have a limit of 25 generations or questions every two hours. If you need more, you can opt for Premium subscriptions. Unlike ChatGPT or Google Gemini, Grok boasts of having fewer restrictions in his responses and offers superior image generation to other AI. For example, with ChatGPT we can only create two per day.
How to use Grok on your iPhone step by step
Getting started using Grok from your iPhone is easier than it seems. First of all Open the X app and look for the Grok button. You'll find it in the bottom bar, next to the search magnifying glass. It's an icon with a diagonal bar. From there, it will offer you several questions in case you don't know where to start. The magic happens in the bottom bar, where it says “ask anything”.
Something very important is select “Grok 2” from the drop-down list which you find above, just below the iPhone's Dynamic Island. As you see, too you will find this “Fun Mode”. Notice the difference in response with Fun Mode enabled.
As you see, there is a “+” to attach photos with which you can then ask questions or use them as a template to create new images. It also has voice recognition. We recommend Get the most out of your image generator since it does not have any type of filter. We were able to create a giraffe with Apple Vision Pro and you can see that the result is impeccable.
Should we go further? We'll ask Grok to create an image of Tim Cook using a Samsung smartphone. cNo other AI could create the image of a public figure. As you can see, for Grok and X there is no problem giving us a picture of what we ordered.
Grok is particularly useful for consulting, having fun and above all generating images. And the best thing is that you have it in an app that most of us already use daily. Twitter X has gone through a lot of changes, but this is one of the best implementations they've been able to pull off in the last year.
