Last night during the Game Awardsannounced Saber Interactive and Universal Studios Turok: Originsa third-person co-op shooter that marks the first addition to the franchise since 2019. Origins doesn't have a release date yet, but it's being developed by the same studio behind the fantastic Space Marine 2.
On December 12th, during the (better than expected) Game Awards 2024, Turok: Origins was officially revealed with a slick trailer featuring cinematic pre-rendered action and real gameplay. Here's the trailer, which you might have missed if you'd seen it, as it got a bit buried under all of this other big revelations of the evening.
If you are a sting Fan like me, after watching this trailer, you probably had a similar question: Wait, this is a third-person shooter? And yes, it is. In a new post on Official PlayStation BlogSaber Interactive Game Director Jesus Iglesias explained why they switched to the third-person perspective, considering the classic franchise is mostly known as an FPS series.
“We are all big fans of the previous games and the franchise as a whole,” Iglesias said. “But ultimately we wanted to go in a different direction than before sting Title.”
“Sabre has a long history of developing third-person shooters, and our experience in this space gives us a unique opportunity to evolve the franchise while maintaining familiar elements that make a great game.” sting Experience. We have created a new interpretation of the classic sting franchise that will appeal to both old and new fans.”
I think it makes perfect sense that Saber Interactive, that have previously developed World War Z and well reviewed this year Space Marine 2 (both third-person shooters) would go in this direction stingbut it still seems strange to me. However, I loved it Space Marine 2so I'm still looking forward to playing Turok: Origins.
As for the latest sting Saber Interactive isn't ready to tie into the larger franchise just yet, but hints that there will be some connections. Iglesias also confirmed this Turok: Origins supports cooperatives, e.g Space Marine 2it can also be played solo.
The switch to third-person is unexpected, but I suspect fans will be more open to this installment of the series than the last release, 2019's cozy isometric action game Turok: Escape from the Lost Valley.
