Mary Harron's American Psycho (2000), despite a poor reception at the time, has become a modern classic over the years. What's the secret? A killer performance from Christian Bale. Now, we've learned that Luca Guadagnino's new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel has recruited an actor who can match or exceed those vibes: Austin Butler.
It's been less than two months since we learned that Lionsgate was planning to release a new adaptation of the novel (which wasn't a remake of the original film). Of course, Guadagnino as director is a great start, and scribe Scott Z. Burns is no small name either. But this is one of those projects whose life or death depends on the actor carrying the movie on his back. Luckily, Lionsgate and Guadagnino signed one of the best young players working today.

Variety appears to have been keeping tabs on the project and revealed casting news. The site acknowledged the rumor that Jacob Elordi may have circled the part, but did not directly confirm whether he actually tested it. Regardless, the two rising stars have something in common: having recently played Elvis Presley for Baz Luhrmann and Sofia Coppola respectively.
Butler quickly became one of the hottest names in Hollywood, working in film and television with Luhrmann, Jeff Nichols, Denis Villeneuve and Cary Fukunaga. What’s next? He's part of Ari Aster's next film, Eddington, and will likely join Michael Mann's Heat 2, among many other projects. At 33 years old, that’s quite a course. Anyone who saw Dune: Part 2 earlier this year knows he was a great actor as our favorite bald psycho Federer-Lausa, so I think he's ready to play Patrick Bateman.
As for Guadagnino, he remains one of the most prolific and successful filmmakers working today. This year alone, he's released “Contenders” and “Queer,” filmed “The Manhunt,” and begun filming around a handful of projects, including “Sgt.” DC Studios' Rock is likely to be his next project, marking a reunion with Daniel Craig following Queer . However, we are still waiting for confirmation on this, so stay tuned.
