2024 was a scary year in the real world. That is why it is somewhat comforting to be able to resort to the horrors of video games where the scares are fun and challenging instead of ruining your life. Better let's stop philosophizing and look at the list of the 10 best horror games released in 2024.
10. Withering Rooms
Mostyn House has to be the most haunted mansion of all time. Not only is it filled with monsters and all manner of aberrations, but the horrors we face change every night. That's right, this indie title combines elements of 'roguelike' and 'soulslike' with 'survival horror' with excellent results. We had never played anything like this before.
9. Still Wakes The Deep
This stealth and puzzle 'walking sim' from The Chinese Room —considered one of the creators of the genre for their work Dear Esther—takes us to an underused setting in horror stories that is very appropriate for them: an oil platform. The horror that the terrifying monsters cause us is high, but not as much as that which the story of a protagonist who simply fears never seeing his family again manages to convey. This gem is crowned by excellent voice acting with Scottish accents.
8. Fear The Spotlight
This short experience is much more than a tribute to PlayStation's 'survival horror' thanks to its interesting story, simple mechanics and pleasant protagonists. It's not going to become a classic, but we're going to remember Amy and Vivian fondly (and the Reflector with a lot of hate).

7. Clock Tower – Rewind
He Clock Tower which came out Super Famicom in 1995 is one of the most influential horror games in history. Although many of us were already able to experience it thanks to emulators, it is nice to finally enjoy this important title in an official version outside of Japan. Essential for lovers of Dario Argento's work.

6. Slitterhead
The most recent work of one of the creators of Silent Hill y Forbidden sirens It is a very bizarre game. It is full of risky ideas both at a playable and narrative level and perhaps needs to be a little more polished, but hunting one of the most horrible monstrosities we have seen while controlling a soul that can jump from body to body is absolutely fascinating.

5. Conscript
Unlike most games on this list, Conscript It does not confront us with serial killers or supernatural horrors, but it does confront one of the most terrible events in the history of humanity. Using the mechanics and aesthetics of retro survival-horror, it puts us in the shoes of a French soldier in the trenches of the First World War. That's scarier than any zombie or demon.
4. Crow Country
Another survival-horror with a retro aesthetic that uses graphics in the style of the first PlayStation. The adventure of 'agent' Mara Forest in this horror amusement park is full of interesting characters, fun puzzles and a story that is as mysterious as it is intriguing. There is no doubt that it is one of the best horror games of 2024.

3. Sorry We’re Closed
It's true that half of this list of the best horror titles of 2024 is dominated by retro style, but those games really stood out this year. Look for example at Sorry We’re Closeda work that does not simply try to imitate the Resident Evil classics, but adds playable elements such as a weak point system, a bright color palette and a delicious 'queer' plot with excellent characters.

2. Silent Hill 2 Remake
We didn't expect Bloober Team to live up to one of the most beloved horror games of all time, but we were wrong. This 'remake' not only respects the original game, but builds on it with new ideas that make the nightmare of James searching for his deceased wife in the cursed town mandatory for horror fans… again.

1. Mouthwashing
A ship stranded in space and five crew members who see their mental health deteriorate slightly as food and supplies run out in this adventure with a retro aesthetic and non-linear narrative that… You know what? It is better not to know more. It's the best horror game of the year and the less you know about what awaits you, the better.
