The series' central tension has always been rooted in the deadly consequences of playing the twisted versions of children's games in the series. In the past, Squid game has turned Red Light, Green Light into a massacre machine, thrown marbles into a breeding ground for deadly deception, and literally put lives in the hands of people with Tug of War. The new season brings a murderous twist to even more traditionally harmless games.
Before the season comes to the island for the start of the competition, the seller combines two-handed rock, paper, scissors with Russian roulette. After capturing Woo-seok (June Suk-ho) and Mr. Kim (Oh Dal-su), two of the men hired by Gi-hun to find him, he forces them to each make a choice in stone, paper , throwing scissors with each of their hands before taking back a selection and determining the winner based on the final selection. The loser received a shot in the temple, with the risk of the hammer hitting an empty chamber. As we have seen, the fact that you had to observe in a split second what your opponent was playing and decide which of his hands you wanted to take back led Mr. Kim to act on instinct alone, instincts that convinced him to do so , to spare his younger lackey.
Later in the season, a six-legged pentathlon was introduced, in which six competitors each tie one of their legs to the other as they move through an obstacle course in which they compete in five games: Ddakji, Flying Stone, Gongi, Spinning Top and Yegi. Apart from Ddakji, the other four were all new arrivals. But none of these led to heartbreaking results like the last new game introduced in season two: Mingle.
In Mingle, participants stand on a rotating platform surrounded by several open spaces. When the platform stops rotating, the announcer announces the number of people who must be gathered in a group and in one of the rooms until the time stops. Anyone who leaves a room after the time has expired will be shot, as will participants in a room with the wrong number of (alive) players. Alliances are formed and dissolved within minutes depending on what is required of them to survive, and the mad dash toward doors results in participants physically trying to keep others out of their rooms, effectively killing them. This was the first game of the season that clearly demonstrated to participants that teamwork is an illusion of survival and that saving yourself ultimately comes down to killing others.
