We all know it: this creative is a key piece in Nintendo. In this case we are talking about news focused on Shigeru Miyamoto, a fundamental developer in the company. We have details of his first days in the company.
Miyamoto has shared in a 2000 Game Maestro interview rescued by Shmuplations who, during his first interview at Nintendo, presented a student project: A coat rack with animal faces and a handle so toddlers could easily use it, plus a see-saw with a built-in swing. He discovered after joining the company that Nintendo had applied for a design patent for his coat rack without informing him.. This led him to describe Nintendo as a shrewd company.
Miyamoto said he brought his “student works” as a kind of portfolio to the interview. “One was a hanger for kindergarteners. It was a hanger with animal faces and a handle, so that even the smallest children could use it easily. “There was also a seesaw with a swing attached.”
When Miyamoto met Yamauchi, “he was very thoughtful and told me, 'I want you to know that we didn't hire you because of references, but because we want you to work for us.' But after I joined, I found out that they had applied for a design patent for the hanger I had designed (laughs). I mean, I was able to get the patent rights without having to file the fee myself, so it was all good (laughs). I remember thinking, 'This is a clever company!' But in my case, they let me do what I wanted and I saw them as a generous benefactor or sponsor.”
