Better graphics performance
The benchmark has hinted at this, and it is now confirmed that Apple has used the A12Z chip in the new iPad Pro 2020 to recycle the previous generation A12X chipset. We tell you how to profit from it.
When Apple launched the iPad Pro 2020, many observers were cautious about the name of the chipset. The so-called system-on-chip [SoC] did not hear the name A13X traded during the rumor stage. Instead, Apple now calls the iPad A12Z Bionic. When you carefully study the basic technology and benchmarking, you can also see the relationship between the names. A12X and A12Z are very similar. Now, this has been confirmed by TechInsights analysis.
The chip expert decided on Monday:
- After our analysis, we can confirm that the A12Z GPU chip installed in the iPad Pro [model A2068] is the same as the previous A12X.
- Both chips are manufactured using a 7-nanometer process and have the same chip and storage device.
- The "new" A12Z chip has eight active GPU cores; the A12X chip also has eight GPU cores, of which only seven are active.
What this means for iPad Pro buyers
The new iPad Pro provides slightly better graphics performance, but essentially the performance data for 2018 and 2020 are very close. The A12Z processor is definitely not the reason to buy the iPad Pro 2020.
The biggest innovation is that the LIDAR scanner is now installed on the back of newer models and better cameras. Those without it will find cheap alternatives in the 2018 model.
Netzwelt
As we know from the iPhone, the new iPad Pro is an S update. This is not a tragedy. Both processors are absolutely powerful enough to provide sufficient power reserves in the coming years. For many interested people, Apple's new iPad keyboard [so-called Magic Keyboard] is the real highlight of the iPad this year. The magic keyboard can also be used with the 2018 iPad Pro. MacBook Air is also an important replacement for iPad Pro.
