Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord has been in the early access phase for a week. Medieval simulation fans have been waiting for many years to continue. Kuro looks at Taleworlds' new plant and tries to build his own kingdom. Or to gain a foothold at all. He will share his experiences with you in the coming weeks.

In order to be taken seriously in the medieval world, you need a clever name. Christian Kurowski absolutely doesn't work there. Artemius Hornraven, on the other hand, fits much better. What I like very much: When creating your own hero, some questions are asked how the character grew up. Depending on the answer, you determine your skills.

Anyone who knows me knows that I would like to spend an hour or two in a character editor. When I am finally brought to Calradia, I start on a training site. "It can't be that hard to swing a sword …" A thoughtless thought, which I should have noticed a little later.

You don't just press a button to attack. Rather, I have to move the mouse in a certain direction in order to swing the weapon onto the enemy from this angle. The same applies to parrying. Although this looks a bit funny on the part of the animations, it results in tactical and demanding arguments. I initially archived my plan to level entire armies with a powerful two-handed weapon in my brain when I was filleted by the first tutor teacher like a turkey on Thanksgiving. Without a sturdy shield in my left hand, I'm guaranteed not to go into a duel with anyone.

The adventure can start!

Fortunately, my brother Nathanos is by my side. And even though our two younger siblings were kidnapped, he waits patiently on the training ground until I have waved every weapon around. After a while I feel ready. Ready to hold those robbers accountable who destroyed my family. We ride to a nearby village to get provisions. The village spokesman was also attacked by bandits. I hire a couple of his soldiers. So far so good.

My job now is to mix up a few crooks. It is all less glorious than I would like it to be. I gallop clumsily across the battlefields as Nathanos and my hired squad clear everything and everyone out of the way. We meet a healer. He's talking about an amulet that supposedly belonged to an emperor. I didn't really listen, I found the information about the bandit camp more important, where I could find out more about the whereabouts of my missing siblings.

I enter this bandit camp with a man and a mouse. My people roll over the guards. I mostly just watch and am happy if I hit anything with my hatchet. Then I meet the leader. I can challenge him to a duel. “How dangerous does he want me to be? After all, that's the tutorial. All battles up to this point were a snap! ”

It turns out: I don't get particularly smart in my thinking. Again I will be knocked out of the mountain pines in a matter of seconds. However, my ambition is piqued. Quickly reload the game and try again. This tragedy lasted over half an hour. At some point, I simply chased my wild pack onto the boss. However, I was not proud.

On my own

Until then, Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord hadn't been able to inspire me. But then my brother says goodbye, who goes in search of the siblings. He also takes along the soldiers who fought so bravely, bravely and hard. I am completely alone. The tutorial is over, I can now do what I want. Oh weia.

I feel a little overwhelmed, but my curiosity is piqued. That's the kind of premise that always excites me most about games: freedom. But if I ever want to mature into a powerful ruler in Calradia, I need an army. I go to the nearby villages and buy the loyalty of some soldiers. Together we move through the area.

Above all, I have been targeting looters. I can confidently defeat them with my cucumber troop. Even with my modest number of soldiers, there is a mood. I can give them orders to proceed or to form. Commanding my mini army is fiddly, but fun. Over time, I also become more courageous and sometimes even manage to defeat one or the other enemy myself.

The beginning of an epic adventure?

I also capture some enemies that I sell in the larger cities for a ransom. Alternatively, I can include them in my army. At the blacksmith's shop I could theoretically forge the weapon of my dreams, but I still lack the materials and the know-how. But looks like an interesting mechanic.

Around me, kings move through the country with their impressive armies. Some villages are already under siege from hostile empires. Messages keep appearing that important personalities have been captured. Meanwhile, I have my hands full building my clan. The possibilities seem enormous, but I'm still at the very beginning.

Fortunately, numerous updates were released within the first week, which cleared some bugs. Taleworlds' medieval simulation still needs a lot of attention and fine-tuning, but the fascination of playful freedom is already noticeable.

Establishing relationships with other well-known personalities, taking part in tournaments in the various arenas, steadily increasing the clan, founding caravans and trading, or continuing to pursue the main quest: in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord I am not lacking in possibilities, hopefully at some point to become powerful To become a string puller.
