Minecraft shows its impressive ray tracing effects in the trailer

Nvidia has announced the launch date for Minecraft's open beta with ray tracing (Minecraft RTX). On April 16, in two days, the time has come. We tell you how you can participate in the beta and what hardware you need.

What is needed?

The basic requirement is Minecraft for Windows 10. Anyone who already owns the Windows version of the block adventure will receive the raytracing update free of charge and – provided that the appropriate hardware is available – can easily participate in the open beta. Everyone else is only interested in buying.

Hardware: In principle, all Turing models (GTX 16 and RTX 20) as well as some Pascal cards (GTX 10) are able to perform real-time beam calculation.

Nvidia itself advises whether the high demands of the ray tracing algorithm explicitly lead to those specifically designed for it RTX graphics cards from Geforce RTX 2060 with dedicated ray tracing cores. The latter is said to be able to display Minecraft RTX at 1080p resolution in smooth 60 fps.

By the way: Minecraft RTX uses the more complex path tracing, in which, in contrast to normal ray tracing, significantly more light rays are calculated.

Six new maps & DLSS 2.0

In order to counteract the high resource consumption or frame rate drops, Nvidia implements Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) in version 2.0.

If you have all the prerequisites, you can obtain and enjoy six maps specially designed for Minecraft RTX via Minecraft Marketplace (or Microsoft Store) – also free of charge.

Summarized

You need:

  • Minecraft for Windows 10 (Microsoft Store)
  • for optimal performance Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 and higher, everything below is unsuitable

You get:

  • six new maps specially built for ray tracing (Minecraft Marketplace and MS Store)
  • Ray tracing is available in creative and survival modes
  • is in the game by pressing the ";" the switch between RTX On and RTX Off possible
