In No Rest for the Wickedwhen you’re diving into the game for the first time, it can be an extremely tough time—but the right build can make the difference between thriving and barely scraping by. In this guide for the brutal Action RPG
we will be taking a look at one of the early-game builds that can help you when you’re starting out and support you on your journey.
No Rest For the Wicked Fire Slinger Build
Unlike most RPGs, No Rest for the Wicked
does not have a class system that determines the initial spread of your attributes. Instead, you start out with 10 points in all attributes, and your build will depend on which attributes you invest in as you level up.
In this guide, we will show you how to put together a build that utilizes the Intelligence attribute as the main stat—the Fire Slinger build—intended for early-game use (level 1–10).
Gear and Spells
For this build, we will be using the Entwined Root as our main weapon.
This is a one-handed wand that can be found easily in the early stages of the game.
Wands are surprisingly the most versatile weapon type in the game right now, as they offer both excellent melee and ranged options while also granting access to spells that deal both physical and elemental damage—thanks to their one-handed nature.

No Rest for the Wicked Apprentice Build
In this guide, we will be taking a look at one of the early game builds that can help you when you’re starting out and will help you on your journey.
The Entwined Root comes with two spells:Fire Dart and Fire Blastgiving us all the tools necessary for both melee and ranged attacks. Although these runes cannot be charged up, they are both excellent tools for dealing with enemies and setting them on fire.
The first spell, Fire Dartshoots a single spell bolt that deals fire damage and sets enemies ablaze.
Although this spell cannot be charged for a more powerful shot, it can still deal considerable damage and is very easy to weave into your regular attack combos as a combo finisher.
The second spell, Fire Blastsets off an explosion at the base of your target and can deal area-of-effect damage to multiple enemies in proximity.
Like Fire Dartthis spell also cannot be charged, but it can be cast almost instantaneously—making it easy to incorporate into your regular attack combos without the need to prepare or charge it up.
We will focus purely on fire damage with this build and fully take advantage of this weapon by slotting in the Fire Throw spell for the third rune slot.
This rune can be extracted from the Climber’s Pick weapon and allows you to throw your weapon like a boomerang, dealing fire damage twice—once on the way out and once on the return.
For the final slot, we will use the Heat Enchantment spell. This rune can be extracted from the Azure Blade or purchased from Eleanor after upgrading her shop.
Casting this spell imbues your weapon with fire, allowing you to deal fire damage with regular attacks and increasing your overall damage output.
With these four spells, you can become the embodiment of fire in the early stages of the game, allowing you to burn through your enemies.
Using the wand as our primary weapon also gives us the ability to use a shield in the off-hand slot, allowing us to block enemy attacks when we don’t have enough stamina to dodge or parry, thereby mitigating damage.
Armor Pieces
For armor, we’ll go with cloth piecesprimarily because we want as much mobility as possible with a lighter equip load. In the early game, your maximum equip load is limited, and you’ll likely stay in the Normal weight class even with the lightest armor.
As you level up and gain more equip load, you can start slotting in heavier armor, but it’s best to avoid the Heavy class to prevent slow, heavy rolling.
Affixes and Enchantments
For the “Fire Slinger” build, we’ll look to utilize enchantments with Focus-related affixes.
Affixes like Increased Focus Gain and Decreased Focus Cost are key targets, as they greatly benefit this spell-casting build.
We’ll avoid affixes that complicate resource management—especially those that increase Focus Drain or Focus Costas they make casting spells more difficult. Also avoid negative affixes such as Decreased Item Load or Decreased Maximum Healthwhich reduce survivability and make mistimed dodges more punishing.
Rings
At this stage in the game, the rings you find are mostly dependent on drop luck.
For this build, ideally, you’ll want the Band of Calmnesswhich increases focus gain from landing regular attacks—perfect for a spell-focused build.
Other strong options include:
- Rune Ring – Increases spell damage at the cost of reduced regular attack damage.
- Agility Ring – Increases movement speed and reduces stamina cost of attacks.
Gems
The “Fire Slinger” build depends on gaining as many focus points as quickly as possible, so we’ll prioritize Focus-oriented gems on gear.
- Chipped Dianite – Can be infused into armor pieces; reduces focus cost by 2–5% (up to 3–10% when placed in gloves).
- Chipped Moonstone – Regenerates focus passively in combat; extremely valuable for any spellcasting build.
- Chipped Jewel – Increases maximum focus. For gear with only one gem slot, this should be prioritized across your loadout to support consistent spell casting.
Consumables
While there are no must-have consumables, they are helpful in tough situations.
- Stamina and Focus Potions – help with resource management in combat.
- Bombs – Offer additional ranged options for dealing with groups or finishing off tougher enemies and bosses.
Stat Allocation
As mentioned, this build mainly focuses on the Intelligence attribute—but putting all your points into one stat can be detrimental in the early game.
Distribute your stats wisely between Health, Staminaand Focus. A good approach is to allocate 1 point into Intelligence and distribute the remaining 2 points into any combination of Health, Stamina, or Focus.
Investing a point or two in Equip Load is also helpful to keep your weight class out of “Heavy,” avoiding the cumbersome heavy rolling.
By level 10, your attributes should roughly be:
- Health: ~15 points
- Stamina: ~15 points
- Focus: ~15 points
- Intelligence: ~16 points
Having at least 100 HP improves survivability as enemies become tougher. For Staminaaround 60 points is ideal since spells are your main offense. Focus should be around 150 points to ensure you can cast comfortably with a large enough pool.
For Equip Loadaim for a max of 200 to stay within the Normal weight class.
Final Thoughts
No Rest for the Wicked can be an unforgiving experience if you get off to a bad start—but the Fire Slinger build provides a strong foundation to carry you through the early game.
This build leverages a wand, arguably the most versatile weapon type in the game. You’re not limited to just casting spells or performing regular attacks—you can fluidly weave spells into your melee combos, preventing situations where you’re locked into a combo finisher and unable to dodge.
An added bonus of focusing on fire is that igniting enemies causes damage-over-time burn effects. While harder to trigger, this DOT stacks and can significantly whittle down boss health bars.

No Rest For the Wicked Boarskin Fanatic Build
In this guide, we will be taking a look at a build that you can put together once you’ve reached the end of the early game.
While the build offers solid offensive capabilities, it comes at the cost of lower HP. You’ll need to be cautious and avoid taking hits—just one or two can be fatal.
Lastly, since we’re staying in the Normal weight class, this build isn’t the most agile or tanky, so proper timing of your dodges is crucial. Getting caught in a combo will often lead to death.
That wraps up my guide to building the Fire Slinger for No Rest for the Wicked. I hope you find it helpful on your journey through the island of Sacra. If you have any tips or questions, feel free to share them in the comments below!
