  • The Nintendo Switch 2 only enables memory extensions with special microSD express cards.
  • These enable higher data transfer rates between the console and the memory card than older microSD cards.
  • The MicroSD express cards are currently only available to a limited extent.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is sold with 256 GB of internal memory. This may be enough for occasional players – but if you want to save more titles on your console, you have to expand the memory. With the predecessor you could do this with every normal microSD card, but for the Nintendo Switch 2 the manufacturer has created additional requirements. You can find out which these are and what you should consider here.

If you want to buy the new Nintendo Switch 2 and also provide for a memory expansion, you will have to take a closer look at the purchase of memory card. Because the new console supports the special memory cards in MicroSD Express format. This is a further development of normal microSD cards that achieve much higher reading and writing speeds and are therefore more suitable for performance-heavy games.

If you are already using a microSD card in the Nintendo Switch 1 and want to get the successor, you can unfortunately not continue to use this microSD card. Currently, the special memory cards are still rare, but after the market launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 in June, however, more version of the microSD cards should gradually publish. Adata has already announced a corresponding model with the Premier Extreme Microsdxc SD Express 7.1.

Nintendo itself recommends Samsung's approximately 60 euro MicroSD Express cards for Switch 2. This is currently only available with 256 GB memory size. Alternatively, Sandisk offers similar MicroSD express memory card with 128 GB (49.99 dollars) or 256 GB (59.99 dollars). A cheap alternative that is not advertised by Nintendo is the Pny Microsd Express with 128 GB memory for 47 dollars.
