As mobile devices take over our daily lives and traditional computers lose ground and become more prevalent for professional and / or overworked users, Apple observes how your service division earns more money thanks in part for great ideas like AirPods, Apple Watch or the Magic Pro keyboard. And the pace is not expected to stop, because there are talk of future successes such as AirTags or those high-tech studio headphones that have leaked rumors.
In this context, it would not surprise me that in the offices of Apple Park (or at home during the ongoing epidemics as I write these lines) they were conducting sessions inquiring mind to see what accessories Apple can make and sell in the future so you can continue to use that ability. Y There is a market that Apple has not directly touched and could be a nest of possibilities: for NAS.
You've probably heard of them before if you're tech-savvy. NAS (or Network Attached Storage) for hard-drive devices that are connected directly to our router, as well as integrated processor and RAM, provide a variety of services in addition to a simple shared storage network in our house. The Xataka partners have an excellent introduction guide for them.
The more we talk, and we always talk in the home field, the more NAS is used to backup, downloading content, manage various libraries (and access them remotely) or installing a web server. We can also manage to manage P2P downloads, as also explained from Xataka. How could Apple take advantage of the launch of its own NAS? There are some interesting things that go through our mind, but also some inconsistencies.
Reasons why & # 39; App NAS & # 39; s like new
- As users get more functionality with their iPads, the idea of external and private storage from any device and wherever it makes sense. Having it on the NAS will indicate the emergence of external custom disks and may represent an alternative to the cloud where privacy is fully guaranteed and it is owned by us.
- NAS can be an excellent device to add to HomeKit's home automation platform, with all the automation opportunities it says.
- In NAS you can do it local default for all iOS, iPadOS and tvOS devices in-house. Maybe I can do it again from Mac and represent the emergence of Time Machine.
- The user interface with the software that NAS is administered is often much improved, something that Apple can "change" through the app and / or through obvious interactions with its applications.
- An attractive niche: our images. Libraries can take hundreds of GBs, and Apple can sell storage and control solutions through NAS. Imagine being able to access all the pictures of your life, and staying over 1 TB, from wherever you want. Imagine that when you take a picture with your iPhone, go to iCloud but iCloud intelligently manages your NAS storage.
- Thanks to the development of wireless networks, future Apple TVs could become a NAS well.
The reasons that the & # 39; App NAS & # 39; never see the light
- Apple already has a good business of selling subscriptions for additional storage on iCloud, too the NAS can turn on money from that business. In addition, the idea is that the home user tends to have everything in the cloud.
- The first reason to install and configure NAS is unauthorized download of content by P2P customers. Apple will absolutely reject that, banning the work and therefore favor the manufacturers who allow it. Probably not good business for those in Copertino.
- The NAS is something (currently in existence) used by technology makers, and Apple is focusing on selling accessories to everyone to raise revenue.
- Apple has already sold local network storage solutions … and they shouldn't have been so successful to see that they stopped selling their Time Capsules and transferred HomeKit functions to third-party administrators.
In short, I'm one of the ones that Apple should have at least he learned that it was possible introducing a NAS or something like NAS made from the perspective of its engineers. But as Macs continue to cease to be the domain of everything and the need for storage is accessible from everywhere growing, Apple NAS's hypothetical interest (at least mine) is as likely as it is or more "external drive". The reasons for having it are as many as those of being silent.
