The spokesman for the character Heavy from Team Fortress 2, Rick May, died at the age of 79. Valve has now implemented a statue in his honor that fans can say goodbye to.
Team Fortress 2 is considered to be one of the most important multiplayer shooters of all time, which has shaped the genre significantly and has influenced numerous subsequent games. The classic figures in particular have practically burned themselves into the collective memory and have become material for numerous memes in recent years.
Who was rick may
The Canadian-American actor and voice actor was particularly known for his roles in numerous video games. In addition to the Heavy in Team Fortress 2, May also lent his voice to characters from classics such as Star Fox 64 or Age of Empires II. He also worked on the theater stage and on the radio and published numerous radio plays there.
After a stroke in spring 2020, May was treated in a nursing home and died on April 8, 2020 of an infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Around a month after his death, a statue with the inscription "That was a Hell of a Campaign, Son" was erected to pay the speaker his last respects. The saying is an allusion to one of the Heavy's sayings from the game.
In the official Team Fortress 2 subreddit, many players show their respect for May and their approval for the action of Valve. A short clip shows two teams saluting in front of the statue. Based on a meme and an unlockable item in Team Fortress 2, a Heavy even puts a sandwich in front of the statue. The players are touched, one player wrote in Reddit:
"No community will ever be like Team Fortress 2, I'm so proud to be part of it!"
So if you also want to be part of the farewell ceremony or just witness this beautiful idea from Valve, you can simply log into Team Fortress 2 and play a round, the statues will still be available throughout May.
