Personality News The influential women of video games: Interview with Célia Hodent (Lead UX Fortnite, etc.)

Like any cultural medium, video games tackle various themes, often related to our society, even in the most fantasy universes. This mirror of our humanity can only exist through the vision of creators, thanks to their creativity itself inspired by their experiences. However, today, the players in the gaming environment are not entirely representative of society, whether for gender, race, demography, cultural background or social background. In this series of interviews, we wanted to focus specifically on women in video games, who today represent only 15% of workers in the sector.

This interview is part of a series. In all, nine interviews will be broadcast one by one, each Sunday at 4 p.m. They were recorded between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. From next Sunday, they will be added in turn in the file: Influential women of video games in France

Do women come to see video games as a viable professional environment? If the question is not economic, the sector being stronger than ever, it remains nonetheless important. The absence of many female faces in the media probably does not help young women, when studying their career plans, to get into the game. But who better than the actresses of the sector to explain their feelings to us? Contrary to what some people may think, they have a lot of good things to say about their experiences and often consider the video game sector as a welcoming environment where the fact of being a woman has not prevented them from finding employment, even if they may have encountered some additional barriers.

For this first meeting, we spoke with Célia Hodent, doctor of psychology, with more than 10 years of experience in the sector. Since 2008 and his arrival at Ubisoft, she was able to officiate in the field of UX (user experience) on licenses like Rainbow six, before going to Lucas Arts for Star wars 1313 (which will never see the light of day), then to launch out at Epic on the beginnings of a game which will become large: Fortnite. Here she tells us about her story, her profession that few still understand today, but also her general vision of video games as a medium.

Editor's note: This interview was recorded in December 2019, in Helsinki during the Slush Festival
