In June 2020 we are facing a horror game that wants to tell "the real story" of a famous Welsh haunted house. The special twist: The opponents in the game hear you breathing in front of your pc. And the slightest sound can cost you your virtual life.
Hold your breath
Maid of Sker uses Welsh folklore and the fate of Elizabeth Williams – a young woman who has been haunted in the so-called Sker house since her death. As in horror games like Amnesia, you have to do without weapons or countermeasures.
You can only escape death by sneaking, distracting and fleeing from opponents. But once you stand in front of one of the so-called "silent men", it means: hold your breath – in the game and in front of the PC. The Concept of voice recognition has been tried in several games, such as the strategy game Radio General, but seems made for the horror genre.
A 3D sound AI recognizes your breathing via a microphone and transfer it to your character. This mechanism should be used for various original gameplay elements. The current trailer offers a foretaste of the game world of Maid of Sker:
What is Maid of Sker about?
Maid of Sker took place in Wales in 1898. The location is the Sker house – one of the UK's most famous haunted houses – that is still on the Welsh coast today and is now a listed building.
There, according to the story, there was once a dramatic argument between a young woman named Elizabeth Williams and her father. Elizabeth planned to run away with her lover. To prevent her from doing so, her father locked her up in the madness at the Sker House, where she died. According to legend, she still has no peace there.
You slip into Maid of Sker into the skin of Thomas Evans, Elizabeth's lover. He wants to free her from her prison and gets caught in the mysterious silent men.
