EA revealed that the owners of its games will be able to upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions for free.
As part of EAThe issuer confirms its earnings for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020. The publisher confirmed that cross-generation games launched this year can be upgraded for free to run on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
EA Chief Operating Officer Blake Jorgensen pointed out that EA recognizes this impact on its revenue in FY2021, but it should not affect the net sales for the full year.
"Please note that this year ’s phased includes the impact of revenue recognition from the games we ’ve launched for the current consoles, and these games can also be upgraded for the next generation of consoles for free. We have initially evaluated the impact of the phased implementation but Note that this will not affect the net reservations for the whole year, nor will it affect the cash flow, only the confirmation time. "Jorgensen told investors.
Jorgensen did not further explain how the upgrade will work, or which games will be supported.
Microsoft of course has confirmed that all of its first-party games will benefit from the Smart Delivery feature, which allows players to purchase the game once and get a version suitable for their console. Third-party studios such as CD Projekt Red are using Cyberpunk 2077 to take advantage of this, but the final decision rests with the publisher.
Sony has not yet made a similar commitment, but Jorgensen ’s comments seem to suggest that the PS5 is not much different from the Xbox Series X in this regard. Of course, unless executives simply mention backward compatibility, this will enable owners of FIFA 21 (cross-generation games) to play the PS4 / Xbox One version on PS5 / Xbox Series X.
