Twitch hype catapults Monster Train into the Steam charts

Monster Train is becoming the latest hit on Steam and Twitch.

The Steam Charts are currently dominated by well-known and big names: The New Frontier Pass to Civilization 6 (which is currently still available for free in the Epic Store) is at the top, closely followed by The Witcher 3: Wild’s Game of the Year Edition Hunt and Terraria, which triggered another hype with its final update.

But another newcomer is currently riding a huge wave of success: The indie tactics and trading card game Monster Train currently attracts thousands of players on Steam and Twitch viewers.

What is Monster Train all about?

After hell has frozen over, we as the demonic platoon leader have to transport the last piece of the blazing hell glow through the realm of the devil to place it in its core and thus rekindle the inferno. However, the powers of heaven want to prevent us from doing so, so we have to protect our evil railroad from angels and other attackers.

How does Monster Train play?

Monster Train is a deck builder and is based in many ways on Slay the Spire. We start with some cards that we use between the automatic round battles to cast spells and summon defenders. This is how we prevent our enemies from reaching the embers of hell we have to protect.

Successful battles reward us with new cards and gold pieces. We can invest the latter if we make a short stop at the dealer or blacksmith – for example, to refill our deck, remove superfluous cards and upgrade our monsters.

There are five different factions in totalthat we can use to build our deck of cards. However, we first have to unlock three of them by playing the game over and over again – Monster Train is also a Roguelike, which rewards each run with progress in the form of unlockable cards, artifacts or even classes.

Where does the hype come from?

The first hype came from the well-known YouTuber Northernlion who has published new Lets-Play videos on Monster Train every day since the release. His content on similar games – such as Slay the Spire and Darkest Dungeon – has so far inspired over 800,000 subscribers.

In the steam reviews of the title thank a number of players refer to the YouTuber and thank him for the reference to the game.

Monster Train also makes big waves on Twitch: At the weekend, almost 35,000 viewers watched various streamers make their way through frozen hell. Also on the German channel PietSmiet the hype that currently transmits the title and describes it as a “new addiction game” has not passed.
