Valve made a major change in how it handles game soundtracks on Steam.

Longest time steam Think of the game soundtrack as DLC. This requires tying the soundtrack to the game, which means you can't just buy music yourself.

Valve now announces that in the future, Steam will treat audio tracks as its own. By creating specific types of apps in Steam's database, customers can now download, listen to, and even buy soundtracks without having to own the related games.

Steam's new music library interface has also been updated to track the separation of all your own albums from games, and you no longer need to navigate to the directory of each game to listen to those tracks.

Valve also enables developers to upload clips of various qualities to Steam's servers, allowing customers to download the required format / quality.

Support everything from universal MP3 to larger lossless formats such as FLAC and WAV. If you choose to receive higher quality formats, Steam will automatically download them when available.

Another side effect of the new system is that soundtracks can now be sold on Steam even if the game itself is not available on Steam.
