Windows 10: How to find your license type (OEM, volume, retail)

Windows 10 has different license types, and each type of license has different conditions. We will show you how to determine if you are using Windows 10 with an OEM, volume or retail license.

Microsoft sells Windows 10 with three different licensing models with different conditions. You can transfer a so-called retail license to another computer. However, this does not apply to most OEM licenses pre-installed on computers or volume licenses used by large organizations and companies.

Retail licenses are available for free in the store, so the end customer version of Windows 10 can be used.

OEM licenses usually use a product key stored in a chip on the UEFI firmware, and Windows 10 is permanently connected to the computer.

A volume license uses the same product key for many computers, which is why it cannot be simply transferred. Microsoft uses the software verification tool “KMS Client” to activate the computer.
