Xbox boss Phil Spencer confessed in an interview that if there is one thing that would make him quit the video game industry forever, it would be the toxic fan base that exists around consoles.

In an interview for the podcast of the portal The Verge Decoder, Spencer reflected on the fans who, in the middle of 2020, continue to attack each other about the preferences of consoles and games they have. When asked what he thought about a video showing a person trashing a newly purchased Xbox Series X, Spencer replied:

“This is the job that I love. My wife tells me that this is the job I am qualified for, but it is definitely what I love. However, tribalism in the industry, if there is something that would make me resign, it would be precisely that.

The Xbox boss delved into this clarification saying that there is a fan base on both sides that has taken things to a destructive level just to see your opponent fail. He said apathy is the biggest competitor for the products and services the industry offers.

While brands are now more respectful of their competitors, there are still fans who all do is hate to hate. Spencer says it’s one of the worst things in this industry and he rightly says so. It is only to go around social networks to see the septic tanks that have become these conversation spaces.

According to Phil Spencer, crossplay has been one of those attempts to eradicate the toxicity that exists in an irrelevant console warfare that all sides have officially chosen to ignore. Instead, developers have made efforts to make video games a more inclusive place.
