Sony is celebrating the launch of PlayStation 5 as the most successful premiere in the entire franchise. With units sold out all over the world, a group of resellers have taken over an inordinate number of consoles. According to a report by Business InsiderThe CrepChiefNotify group has bought around 3,500 PlayStation 5s since its launch.
The group is organized on a Discord channel and claims to have obtained 2,472 consoles ready for resale. Added to this are 1,000 more units that were purchased during the reservation period. The group is made up of 12 key members and thousands of subscribers. These members must pay a fee to enter that starts at $ 40 and can go up to $ 530. The group was formed by selling sneakers and other objects, but with the pandemic its item category focused on the new consoles.
The details of how the group is organized to hoard the products and speculate their price in the market is unknown. Its leader comments that the items are monitored by means of software designed by one of the members and warns when an object is being sold in bulk on eBay.
They know that the need for a new console is irresistible. Especially with parents who are willing to buy one at absurd prices to have it for their children on Christmas day.
In countries like Colombia the situation is different. Chain stores can’t keep up with demand, and the gray market has just given up and given up on buying inventory for the holidays. The reason? No one is going to pay for a PS5 at such a high speculative price.
Sony has not released official figures for its PS5s sold globally. Interestingly, a digital edition of the PlayStation 5 is harder to find than the disc version.
