Studio boss Todd Howard spoke in Interview mit The Guardian about the success of Fallout 76 and Elder Scrolls Online – and that multiplayer games are actually an exception for Bethesda. The American developer and publisher became known and famous for large single-player role-playing games, specifically the successful brands Fallout and Elder Scrolls.

And apparently fans can not be denied, even the MMO releases for the most part how to experience single player role-playing games. Todd Howard explains:

“We’ve found that even if it’s a multiplayer game, whether it’s Elder Scrolls Online or Fallout 76, a large number of our players want to play it like a single player game and don’t want to be distracted by other players. Games handle multiplayer in different ways, and I think all of that has its value. “

Howard also emphasizes that the Bethesda roots in the solo arena lie. But the successes with Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76 are also mentioned:

“Of course we’re big fans of single-player titles, and we’ve had some success with some more multiplayer games.”

Success with single players is no wonder

It’s not surprising that many gamers play the Bethesda titles the way they are used to. Bethesda won the majority of its fans with large single-player RPGs. And Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76 also value an excitingly told story, even if the latter only tended towards its usual strengths again with the NPC update Wastelanders.

Our follow-up test shows how much the NPCs were missing:

Fallout 76 in the follow-up test: upgrade thanks to Wastelanders

In our original test of Fallout 76, but also by many players, the lack of NPCs at launch around two years ago was heavily criticized, along with numerous other (mostly technical) aspects of the game. Fallout 76 appeared with a number of bugs and performance problems. In an interview, Todd Howard clearly acknowledges that mistakes were made in Fallout 76:

“We disappointed a lot of people.”

In the meantime, Fallout 76 has been greatly improved with numerous bug fix patches and content enhancements – thanks to the NPCs for single players too.
