As the release of the Doom Eternal Nintendo Switch port nears, Panic Button confirms how much storage space the game will take up.
There is less than a week to go until the highly anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch port of Doom Eternal, and several Switch owners are looking forward to the game’s release. However, a logistical issue that many users are curious about is the file size of Doom Eternal’s Switch port. Fortunately, the developers of Panic Button have provided an answer.
In September, a Doom Eternal developer said that a Switch port was very close to being ready and now fans won’t have to wait much longer. However, one thing that has remained constant about Doom Eternal across platforms is that it is an impressive game from a technical and visual perspective. Many fans of the game have wondered how well the game will perform on a console like the Nintendo Switch, which Panic Button, the studio in charge of the Switch port, has started to tackle.
During an interview with Nintendo Life, a representative revealed that the file size for Doom Eternal on the Nintendo Switch was approximately 17.5 GB. Given that a standard Nintendo Switch game is just over 10GB and the technical capacity of Doom Eternals, this file size makes sense. Although, the standard storage capacity of a Nintendo Switch is only 32GB, so some users will definitely need to clean up some of their storage space or invest in an alternative storage device.
While the file size for Doom (2016) was roughly five gigabytes more, this is still a fairly large file size for the Switch, taking up more than half the storage capacity. The massive increase in the size of game files has affected virtually every game system currently on the market. With games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare logging over 200GB, it seems that the game file sizes for virtually all triple-A games are only getting larger, and the Nintendo Switch is no exception to this trend.
It will be interesting to see if Nintendo will do anything to remedy this in the future. Despite the console being out for several years, the Nintendo Switch storage limit has remained largely the same. With hundreds of similar console storage sizes, it makes one wonder why the Switch has such a small storage size. Hopefully, the rumored Nintendo Switch Pro will address this issue, if it turns out to be real.
Regardless, it will be interesting to see how well Doom Eternal performs on the Switch. When the game first came out in March, there were discussions online discussing which version of Doom Eternal would be the best to buy. Hopefully, the Switch version should keep up.
Doom Eternal is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One with a Nintendo Switch version launching on December 8, 2020, and with the Xbox Series X / S and PS5 versions currently in development.
