Massive Entertainment confirms that it plans to update The Division 2 for PS5 and Xbox Series X to enable both 4K resolution and 60 FPS.
It’s surprising to think about it, but The Division 2 is over a year old now. It will celebrate its second anniversary in February 2021, and yet as a live service game, The Division 2 is still going full blast. Substantial communities on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox continue to be supported by Massive Entertainment. In fact, the support is strong enough that Massive is so confident in continued support for The Division 2 that he is willing to commit to updates on both PS5 and Xbox Series X / S.
During his most recent State of Play presentation, Massive revealed his plans for the upcoming 12.1 title update for The Division 2. During the presentation, Massive confirmed that he was working on an update for The Division 2 specifically for the PS5 console and Xbox Series. X / S. With update 12.1, The Division 2 will be available in 4K resolution with 60 FPS on next-gen consoles. While Massive doesn’t clarify, the Xbox Series S is likely to have a lower resolution.
Massive clarifies, however, that while it is working on an update for The Division 2 on next-gen consoles, it is not an “optimization pass.” The update will likely only unlock the game’s resolution and frame rate to allow next-gen consoles to improve hardware performance to get the job done, and The Division 2 won’t feature any improvements. Massive is not making any other significant changes on its own.

While it would be great for Massive to give The Division 2 a full range of enhancements for next-gen consoles, only the improved resolution and frame rate will be a huge improvement. The Division 2 features just 30 FPS on both PS4 and Xbox One, as well as PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. The Xbox One X achieved 4K resolution, something the PS4 Pro struggled with, which is impressive in and of itself. alone. However, the new next-gen patch should make the game run much stronger.
During The Division 2’s 12.1 State of the Game title update, another reasonably important announcement was made. Massive had previously announced the release of Codename: Nightmare, a new game experience set at Kenly College. Massive has now canceled this, unfortunately, citing “unforeseen circumstances in what has been a challenging year.” Instead, it will become an apparel event tied to the second half of Season 4.
Suffice it to say, there are still some good things for The Division 2 players. Patch 12.1 will be especially good for those who have purchased a next-gen console. However, it looks like things could be slowing down in The Division 2. That doesn’t mean players can’t keep playing for long just yet.
