Speculation about the return of Ubisoft’s classic franchises has reached an all-time high in recent years, and the studio frequently dives into its previous catalog of franchises for cameos and references in newer titles. While fans of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell have yet to wait their turn in a new installment, fans of Prince of Persia learned last September that Ubisoft is developing a remake for the PC, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox Classic. . After a disappointing performance in September, the studio has revealed just over a month since its release that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will be delayed until March 2021.
Following the reveal of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake during September’s Ubisoft Forward event, fans immediately expressed their disappointment at the game’s visual presentation. The game is in development at Ubisoft Pune, a studio known primarily for its work on mobile titles and the Just Dance series. With a team of over 750 developers, the game is the largest title Ubisoft Pune has developed so far, however the quality of the game’s visuals was criticized for looking underdeveloped and out of date.
In a now-deleted post on Facebook, Ubisoft Czechoslovakia announced that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will be delayed from its release date of January 21 to March 18. The delay is meant to further polish the game with the original statement (translated by ResetEra user NeoRaider) that reads:
“Greetings Prince of Persia fans! During our Ubisoft Forward digital conference, we proudly announced the return of Prince from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. We’re excited to get this game back in your hands as we retell the story of Prince and Farah in incredible 11th-century Persia. However, 2020 was a year like no other. Today we would like to inform you that we need more time to complete the game. With that, the release date for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been moved to March 18, 2021. We think this is the right decision to make sure we deliver a game that you like. Thank you for your patience and continued support for the Prince of Persia, and we hope that you remain safe and healthy this holiday season. ”
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was originally released in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube, PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. The game was a reboot of the Prince of Persia cinematic platformer series as a 3D action-adventure game. The game’s transversal system later became the basis for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, which later inspired characters like Marvel’s Spider-Man. The game was later remastered in the Prince of Persia Trilogy, an HD collection for the PlayStation 3 that also included the game sequels Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. The game received a film adaptation criticized by Walt Disney Pictures in 2010.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on March 18, 2021.
