How to play the Paladin version in Elden Ring
Retaining the characteristics of the classic paladin archetype, this version gives your character the stats and tools necessary to resist incoming damage and use incantations. This concept unfolds in a slow playstyle that uses holy damage dealing attacks while blocking enemy hits with powerful armor and shield sets. In other words, this build is all about staying alive as long as possible while dealing consistent damage.
This build’s endgame build relies on spamming two endgame weapons, the Sacred Relic Sword Wave of Gold skill or the Blasphemous Blade Taker’s Flame skill – the latter when facing enemies resistant to Holy damage. In the early levels, you’ll want to imbue your sword with the Holy Blade’s war ashes, which you find by killing a teardrop beetle in the Third Church of Marika. And, instead of dodging enemy attacks, the shield will become your preferred option to avoid taking damage.
Although in terms of combat this build is quite simple, some preparation is required before certain encounters and bosses. As a Paladin, you should always do a short rotation of incantations to level up before a fight. The most important incantations are the Golden Wish, Flame, Grant me Strength, And Blessing of the Erdtree. These not only increase damage, but also survivability.
However, while you will have a lot of defense and survivability with this build, it will not make you immortal. There are still a few bosses that will give you problems, so there will be times when you need to use distance and dodging to your advantage.
The best stats for Paladin build in Elden Ring
Paladin is a mixed build focused on Vigor, Strength, and Faith. While the first two determine your health and the type of equipment you can use, Faith allows you to use powerful incantations and increase holy damage.
Here are the statistics to aim for:
- Vigor: 50
- Spirit: 25
- Endurance:28
- Strength:22
- Dexterity: 16
- Intelligence:9
- Faith: 60
- Esoteric:9
To achieve these numbers, you will need to choose Confessor as a starting class. For your initial levels, you’ll want to prioritize Stamina and Strength until you meet the prerequisites to use some of the suggested initial gear (Royal Remains set, Longsworn’s Straight Sword, and Brass Shield) in this build. But don’t let Faith fall too far behind, because Faith-based skills will become your main source of damage.
Due to the way this build is designed, you won’t benefit much from secondary stat increases beyond what has been stated. If you think the build is missing something, you can always respec your character.
Best Weapons for Paladin Build in Elden Ring
As for the best weapons for the Paladin build, we have the Holy Relic Sword And Blasphemous Blade. While the former is a powerful weapon with a powerful AoE skill that scales with Faith, the latter works well as your secondary as it will help you deal with strong enemies against holy damage. The Blasphemous Blade skill Taker’s Flame also evolves according to faith.
Between the two, Blasphemous Blade is the first one you’ll get your hands on. Once you are in the final part of the game, head to Volcano Manor, where you can fight Rykard, the God Devouring Serpent, to receive the Remembrance of blasphemers which you can then exchange for the Blasphemous Blade in Roundtable Hold by talking to Enia. This weapon is all you need to defeat the final boss who rewards you with the Memory of the Ancient Beast. With this in your inventory, you can finally obtain the Holy Relic Sword.
But, before you can get your hands on either weapon, as they are late for late game swords, you need to look for a solid option to start your character with. Among the options available in Limgrave, the initial area of the game, you will find two good weapons, the Lordsworn Straight Sword And Knight’s Greatsword. The first drops of Godrick Soldiers, a common enemy found in the ruins of Gatefront. Now, to acquire the second option you will have to defeat Godrick Knightsfound throughout the region.
Once you obtain one of these initial swords, upgrade them and be sure to infuse them with the Holy Blade War Ashes. These weapons are all you need to explore the early areas of the game and defeat the first bosses.
When you get to the middle of the game, it’s time to look for an upgrade. The weapon that will carry you until the end of the game is the Big stars
You find a Great Star on the back of a carriage on the Altus Plateau, along a path southwest of the grace site called Secondary path of the Road of Iniquity. There is another big star in the game that you acquire by defeating Magnus the Beast’s Claw, an enemy you could possibly face if you plan to complete the White Mask Varré quest. Opting for a dual-wielding stance with two large stars is an option if you want more raw damage.
Another piece of equipment you must have as a Paladin is a sigil for casting incantations. During the initial levels, as a Confessor, you can simply upgrade the one you start with – there isn’t really a best early game sigil for building, so you can just use whatever you want. But once you arrive at Volcano Manor, you will be able to obtain the Seal of Erdtreethe best seal for faith-based constructions.
The best armor for building the Paladin in Elden Ring
When playing a paladin, you want to aim for high defense and balance. These two attributes are more common on heavy armor sets, but depending on the combination of pieces you make, it is possible to achieve good stats even with regular armor pieces.
In the early stages of construction, we suggest using the Set of royal remains, one of the best early armors in the game. This is an easy armor set to acquire, accompanied by a great passive that slowly replenishes your HP if your health is low. If you are looking for something more thematically specific, then, the Godrick Knight Ensemble might be the best choice, even if it’s not as good as Royal Remains. The Godrick Knight set is obtained by the Godrick Knight who patrols Limgrave.
To upgrade your armor set after reaching the mid-game and places like Altus Plateau, there are two solid sets to look for. The first is the Twin set. It has good defense against physical and magical damage. You can earn it by completing quest D, Hunter of the Dead. The other option is Tree Sentinel Set, an armor you find in the Auriza Hero’s Grave dungeon. This is heavy armor with a lot of defense, making you more resistant to incoming damage.
At the end of the game, there are two sets perfect for this build. One is the Knight of Haligtree Set
When it comes to finding the best shield for this build, we don’t need to go beyond the Brass shield. This medium shield offers fantastic defense for such a light shield. You can probably catch one just by defeating the Godrick soldiers.
The best talismans for building Paladin in Elden Ring
This version benefits from specific talismans, some of which are essential for a Paladin version. First of all, you must have the Grand-Jar Arsenal, one of the best talismans in Elden Ring, as it increases the weight you can carry. This makes your life easier when it comes to using heavy armor sets. To obtain this talisman, you must complete the Great-Jar’s Challenge in the northern Caelidae.
The second talisman you need is the Dragoncrest Greatshield. Although you can only find this talisman later in the game, in the Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree area, it is a crucial part of construction. This talisman reduces physical damage taken by 20%, an excellent buff for a Paladin.
The last talisman that you cannot ignore and must have in your build is the Shard of Alexander. This talisman, which you earn by completing the Iron Fist Alexander quest, increases the attack power of skills. Since you’ll be spamming skills from both of your weapons, this is a key talisman to have.
Now if you want to increase your damage, you should consider running the Sacred Scorpion Charm. This talisman is ideal for this build because it increases holy damage. This has the side effect of increasing the physical damage you take, but it’s not a major problem considering all the other defensive tools you have at your disposal. You obtain this talisman after defeating Anastasia, the Tarnished Eater in the Smoking Church area located in Caelid.
Have fun crushing your enemies with this version of Elden Ring.
