The Remnant of Leviathan is a brand new boss in the dead space remake, which you must fight as part of the story progression.
Officially known as The Slug, this Dead Space Chapter 8 boss is a completely different name from the original boss fight, using new mechanics for the remake as well. That means you can’t rely on your muscle memory to navigate your way aboard the Valor.

As for the boss fights, it’s relatively simple – you’ll be using cannons with unlimited ammo, for the most part, but if the cannons are destroyed you’ll have to rely on long range weapons.
This mostly means the Plasma Cutter, Pulse Rifle, and Contact Beam, but even if you run out of ammo, you can rely on the Kinesis to finish off the boss!
The other thing is that this encounter happens in a zero gravity environment outside of the Ishimura, meaning you not only fight the boss, but your oxygen tank.
If you’ve upgraded your RIG’s oxygen capacity, you should have enough air to get through the boss fight. We made it with 90 seconds of oxygen (normal difficulty) and still had half a tank after each of the three sections of the boss fight. The amount you need will vary depending on experience and difficulty settings, so keep that in mind.
The Dead Space remake brings back Peng’s treasure and the Hunter and Leviathan bosses, as well as the communication board puzzle and the Centrifuge puzzle. New additions include security clearance levels, weapon slots, and revised trophies and achievements.
Where to encounter Leviathan Remnant in Dead Space
Just at the end of Chapter 8: Search and Rescue, you will have the mission “Deploy the antenna”. When you find yourself at this save point, you know you’re about to fight the boss.
If you haven’t already, make sure you have all the oxygen canisters you need, but if you haven’t struggled with the zero-gravity sections, you won’t have , hopefully no trouble with this one! You probably have the Plasma Cutter equipped, but if you don’t, make sure you have at least one long range weapon with ammo to spare.
Enter the comms maintenance room and click on the sign that says “Enable Long Range Antenna”. You’ll be greeted by an enemy so huge that it can actually fill the most troublesome of all holes: plot holes.
Fill the plot hole
The problem here is that the original version of this boss, The Slug, was supposed to have attached to the Ishimura while in space. This presents a series of problems: the first is the fact that Aegis VII isn’t known for its ability to launch necromorphs into space – how did it get there? It just doesn’t make sense, right off the bat.
The next thing that angered fans was the fact that The Slug, who is somehow now in space, outshot the Asteroid Defense System (ADS) guns that protect the Ishimura while still operating in an asteroid belt. It’s easier to explain – cannons were offline earlier in the game – but it doesn’t get us past the first issue of slugs in space.
Although it was covered in a previous addition to the Dead Space universe, the 2023 remake ended the discussion once and for all, simply stating that it’s the remains (remnant) of the Leviathan boss. that you previously purged from Food Storage. It seems that he clung to the hull on the way out and is clinging to it dearly. Or death – but it works with telepathically bound necrotic biomasses.
How to beat Leviathan Remnant in Dead Space
Below is everything you need to know to defeat the Leviathan Remnant in the Dead Space Remake:
the arena
Once you’re ready, head to the airlock. Before heading out, it’s worth taking a second to imagine the arena you’ll be fighting in, especially if you’re worried about running out of air.
Once you exit, you will be greeted by a long platform perpendicular to the airlock, with you right in the middle. There are three cannons here: one in the middle and one at each end. There are also several oxygen filling stations, both near the airlock and at each end of the walkway.
There is no ammo drop here, as the boss fight can be done without ever reloading your weapon.
The strategy
The immediate problem is that the Leviathan is back. The same tactic you used a few chapters ago will work again – shoot the glowys until they burst.
This time, however, we’re bringing out the big guns. Literally. You have three ADS guns to help you in combat. There are also three bright spots to shoot – go figure.
Be aware that if you take too long, or if you burst a glowy, you will lose your closest cannon, which will be destroyed by one of the boss’s tentacles. If this happens, you’ll have to fall back to your normal long-range weaponry or your Kinesis. Think of it as practice for Chapter 10’s upcoming Zero-G Basketball minigame…
First stage
Make a straight line to the middle barrel and connect your weapon targeting systems to it (click on the blue panel). From here, we’ll shoot the glowys, just like we shot down the asteroids during the ADS cannons showcase a few chapters earlier.
Remember that instead of using L2 + R2 to fire (PS5 controller), you will shoot it with L2 + X. Be careful not to waste ammo!
It will take 12 shots (normal difficulty) – both to pierce the armored web around the glowy and then to burst the glowy. Simply aim and smash X until you see it appear.
Beware of the strange tentacle that comes your way trying to kick you in the air. You can Stasis them to easily dodge them – you probably won’t dodge it just by strafing.
Second step
Turn around and take oxygen next to the airlock. From there you can go left or right. Facing the oxygen tank, turn right.
Look at the end of the platform – you’ll see a glower covering your cannon. Shoot it several times to access the barrel. If you’re out of ammo, you can do this using the projectiles the boss fires at you, but we recommend only shooting when you get close.
As you head in that direction, you’ll notice the Levathan is now sweeping across the bridge with a tentacle. You don’t want to give it a high-five; dodge it (stasis it if you have to) and connect to the cannon.
The plan is to repeat your tactic from stage one, except this time (as mentioned) the boss will fire explosive projectiles your way. Feel free to grab them with Kinesis and return them to the sender, but you should just be able to smash your way in with the left stick – as long as your back isn’t against the wall, you won’t take damage splash.
We find it easier to just ignore them, but the choice is yours!
Third step
Looking towards the Leviathan, there is oxygen on the wall to your left. Chances are you’ll be able to get a refill, so grab some after popping the shiny, then turn around to see the other end of the platform.
Much like a real boss fight, the third and final stage of this encounter speeds things up again.
This time the Leviathan sent a bunch of mines that you need to get past. They’re stationary, so do your best not to hit them as you cross the gap to the final cannon, as the boss is still sweeping across the bridge. Be aware that these will explode as the tentacle sweeps through them, so if you’re low on health, be careful!
There’s a glowy on the wall next to your last cannon, covering another oxygen tank. Shoot it as you enter, even if you’re not out of breath, as you’ll need to fill up on air immediately after the fight.
Activate the cannon, then do whatever you want – watch out for mines, projectiles, and the tentacle punch, but if you’re fast enough you should be fine.
If you lose the barrel, switch to your cutter and shoot the glowy, or grab the projectiles and RTS if you’re out of ammo.
Once you’ve popped the glowy, you can sit back and relax (oxygen permitting, otherwise fill your tank) and enjoy the fireworks! Go back inside after the conversation, save the game and complete the chapter!
Good luck defeating Leviathan Remnant!
