How to play thief in Dragon’s Dogma 2
Thief is a dual-dagger vocation that focuses on concentrating attacks on a single enemy or body part. The thief is capable of unleashing long sequences of rapid attacks on enemies, making him a powerful damage dealer.
Another scenario where Thief shines is in combat large creatures, like dragons and ogres. The thief is awesome at climbing on them and searching for their vital signs. Since this Vocation is able to concentrate much of its damage in a single point, you become the best damage dealer in your party once you reach a creature’s back or head.
It’s a high risk, high reward type of Vocation since you have to get very close to enemies to attack them. More than once, a cyclops will step on you or a dragon’s trail will throw you out of combat. Remember to take time to heal before returning to battle.
Due to the Thief’s ability to concentrate damage on a single point, it is the best vocation when it comes to cut pieces of an enemy’s body, as with Medusa. On the other hand, Thief suffers when facing groups of enemies. Although Vocation has one or two abilities that allow it to hit multiple targets, they are not as effective as a Wizard spell, for example.
Thief is also a very selfish Vocation, providing almost no use to the group outside of it. Smoke screen which blinds the enemies around you, and Trap, which helps to deal with flying enemies. Even so, this is a single-target ability, meaning that fighting a group of harpies is still difficult. To make up for the lack of Vocation support abilities, the Thief’s kit comes with a solid skill that can be very useful when exploring ruins or hunting for chests. Pad allows you to climb over a wall to reach higher places.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Best Thief Skills
In general, Thief doesn’t have a wide variety of skills and some of them are situational. Given that there are only four skill slots, it’s hard to justify equipping abilities like Pilfer without a goal in mind. Thief does, however, have specific skills that you should consider implementing into your core ability rotation for each situation.
Here are our recommendations for the best thief skills in Dragon’s Dogma 2:
- Formless Feint: The Rogue’s Maister skill, Formless Feint, compensates for one of the biggest problems with this vocation, the high risk of being hit by enemy attacks when fighting them. This ability works like a stance and when you activate it, you avoid all attacks from hostile targets. Because it consumes stamina while active, you can keep Feint without form all the time. However, you should always activate it before a meeting.
- Trap: Although Thief is quite mobile, you can’t fight flying enemies well. Your basic attacks don’t reach them and you lack skills that allow you to shoot projectiles. You have, on the other hand, Ensnare, which allows you to lure enemies, bringing flying monsters to the ground where you can fight them properly. You should also use this ability when larger enemies are unbalanced. Ensnare will pull them to the ground, giving you the opportunity you need.
- Intestine and run: To really capitalize on Thief’s ability to scale enemies, Gut and Run is a fundamental skill to have. This is one of the most powerful abilities you have when it comes to damaging enemies and it deals more damage if you hit a weak point on the enemy’s body. In other words, it’s the ability to use when you’re on top of an ogre’s head.
- Flaming Blades: Fire is one of the easiest elements to use in Dragon’s Dogma 2 since almost every enemy in the game is capable of being burned. Enkindled Blades is the only type of self-inflicted “buff” that Thief has and it is possible to use it while latching onto an enemy. Just avoid using it in case your weapons are already enchanted because Enkindled Blades overlaps it.
- Easy kill: This is a solid ability that allows you to quickly dispose of smaller enemies like goblins, wolves, and malicious adventurers that attack you. When you use Easy Kill, you parry their attack and jump behind them to slit their throats. This is an instant kill when facing weak enemies, which is great for clearing out groups of annoying enemies.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Best Basic Thief Skills
Compared to other vocations, Thief is not the one with the longest list of base skills in the game. Functioning as upgrades to the usual ability kit, base skills are important for improving your character’s performance. While it’s entirely possible to unlock all of Thief’s core skills, here are the ones you should prioritize:
- Scarlet kisses: With Scarlet Kisses, you unleash a flurry of slashes. There’s nothing too special about this one, but given that your role as a thief is to deal damage, nothing seems more useful than a skill that will increase the amount of damage dealt.
- Controlled fall: As mentioned in previous sections, you should always climb on enemies. The thief is great for this and it’s also a good strategy for defeating large enemies. That doesn’t mean they won’t resist. Eventually, they may throw you off their backs. The controlled fall is useful in situations like this because it helps you get back on your feet faster and lessens the damage caused by the impact.
- Pad: As you explore the Dragon’s Dogma 2 map, you’ll find chests in places you can’t reach with your usual jump. Footpad lets you wall throw to launch yourself a great distance. With this ability, you can even jump over a closed door, which is great for getting your hands on the sweet treasures hidden in the abandoned ruins of past conflicts.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Best Thief Augments
Augments are passive abilities shared by vocations once you unlock them. This is the best way to optimize and customize your character, working on their strengths. The list of improvements in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is huge, however. Here you will find our recommendations on which upgrades you should use to consider the rest of the build:
- Subtlety: In Dragon’s Dogma 2, when you cause too much damage to an enemy, you attack them and become their target until another character attracts their attention. Since you don’t want to stop attacking just to avoid getting hit by a Cyclops, you should equip Subtlety, one of the thief’s upgrades that decreases the chances of you being targeted by enemies.
- Vigor: Not all dragons or griffins are easy to climb, and in some situations it requires a lot of effort – and time! – to reach their weak points. With Vigor, another of the augmentations you get by leveling up Thief, clinging to enemies consumes less stamina, which is extremely important if you want to avoid falling to the ground without energy to run to safety.
- Verve: You can unlock Verve by increasing the level of Thief and with this ability equipped you increase your strength. This attribute affects the damage you deal with weapon skills and basic attacks with Thief. A simple method to increase your damage potential with this Vocation.
- Endurance: All important actions during combat, from using weapon skills to running and climbing enemies, consume stamina. To avoid situations where you run out, you should always equip Stamina. This archer augmentation increases your maximum stamina, allowing you to perform more actions in sequence.
- Zealous: To equip this ability, you must unlock it while playing Warfarer. The effort pays off since this increase reduces the stamina consumed when performing a weapon skill. With this ability, your primary skills cost less stamina, allowing you to spend more to climb on or run away from enemies.
Good luck playing Thief in Dragon’s Dogma 2!
