Everything we know about The Last of Us season 2

The Last of Us season 2 continues the story of Joel and Ellie while introducing new key characters like Abby.

Season 2 was confirmed by HBO after only two episodes of Season 1 aired. Season 1 of The Last of Us went on to average 32 million viewers per episode in the United States and won eight Emmy Awards.

The Last of Us season 2 release date

The Last of Us season 2 will be released in 2025. This was confirmed as part of a sizzle reel showcasing HBO’s upcoming slate of original shows and series. Showrunner Craig Mazin has confirmed that production on the second series will begin on February 12, which explains why we’re getting so much casting news at the moment.

Abby-Kaitlyn Dever

After much speculation, it was finally confirmed that Kaitlyn Dever would play Abby in The Last of Us Season 2 on January 9, 2024. Dever is well known for her role as Amy Antsler in Booksmart, but Uncharted fans can also see her recognized as Cassie, Nate and Elena’s daughter in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Interestingly, Dever previously auditioned for the role of Ellie in the film adaptation of The Last of Us. However, by the time it came to start production on the TV series, she had lost all consideration.

For those unfamiliar with the events of the game, Abby’s official character description reads: “A skilled soldier whose black and white view of the world is challenged as she seeks to avenge those she loved.”

Jesse – Young Mazino

The younger Mazino was confirmed to play Jesse on January 10, 2024. Mazino is well known for his role as Paul Cho in the Netflix series Beef.

“Young is one of those rare actors who is immediately unmistakable as soon as you see him,” said Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, co-creators of The Last of Us. “We are so lucky to have him and we We can’t wait for audiences to see Young shine in our show.”

Jesse’s character description, spoiler-free, reads: “A pillar of his community who puts everyone’s needs before his own, sometimes at a terrible cost.”

Dina-Isabela Merced

Isabela Merced was announced for the role of Dina on January 11, 2024. Merced previously appeared in Transformers: The Last Knight and Dora and the Lost City of Gold, and is set to play the role of Anya Corazon in the upcoming film Madame Web and Hawkgirl. in Superman: Legacy.

“Dina is warm, bright, wild, funny, moral, dangerous and instantly adorable. You can search forever for an actor who embodies all of these things effortlessly, or you can find Isabela Merced right away,” said Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann . . “We couldn’t be more proud to have her join our family.”

Dina’s official character description reads: “A free spirit whose devotion to Ellie will be tested by the brutality of the world he inhabits.”

• The Last of Us Part 2’s narrative will span multiple seasons – Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin revealed “What I can definitely confirm is that [The Last of Us: Part 2’s narrative] does not fit into just one season. He then added that “four seems like a good number” when asked how many seasons the show would likely need to tell its full story. “You never know…it could end up being three.” or five. But four seems like a good number. Some seasons, because of the story we are telling, will require fewer episodes and others, more. »
• There will be many more infected – In March 2023, co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin responded to some criticism regarding the first season’s somewhat reduced action compared to the game, promising “a lot more infected” in season 2.
• Something from the Lost Levels bonus content in the Part 2 remaster is planned for Season 2 – In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Neil Druckmann revealed that “To tease, I will say that there is at least one element of a cut level that is planned.” [for] the series… I say this with the caveat that we haven’t started filming the series yet and everything is subject to change based on what we ultimately think is best for the series.
• A Bill and Frank spinoff series has been pitched to HBO – While it’s not Season 2 news, a potential prequel miniseries has apparently been pitched to HBO. That’s what Bill’s actor Nick Offerman said backstage after his recent Emmy win. Offerman said, “It’s definitely been pitched. I think we’ve pitched a whole miniseries of a prequel to their lives before they met.” He then joked, “It could be a musical. We’re not short of ideas. We’ll just, we’ll see what Craig [Mazin] and Neil [Druckmann] find.”
