How to start the A Friend in the Dark quest in Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores
To start the “A Friend in the Dark” quest in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, you must have completed the Relic Ruins of Murmuring Hollow.
Once you complete these relic ruinsyou will be in a room where you get the relic on your left and there will be a locked door almost right next to it.
Return to the area outside of this room where the wagon is half fallen from the edge of ruin, and take the energy cell from the front of it.
SO, take the energy cell back to the room with the door locked and place it in the compartment to the right of the door. The door will then open. Head inside the room in front of the door and take the key module in the middle of it.
Exit the key room and the relic room, return to the area where the wagons are and head to the locked door on the other side of the area. Use key module on the console to the left of the door and it will open.
When the doors open, the person behind the mysterious voice will be revealed and you will begin the “A Friend in the Dark” quest.
How to find the first door code for A Friend in the Dark quest in Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores
The person behind the voice is none other than an old friend of Aloy’s, an Oseram named Gildun. They may be a familiar face to you if you’ve ever dabbled in the Frozen Wilds DLC for Horizon Zero Dawn.
Once Gildun is done talking, follow them until you reach a locked door. The door needs a codeand fortunately this one is quite easy to find.
When you’re at the door go back through the tunnel you followed Gildun through get to this point and you should come across a Datapoint halfway through the tunnel.
Scan the data point and the date mentioned in the text is the index of the code. The date is January 17, which means the three digit door code is 117.
Go back to the door And put the code in the panel to the left side. Then follow Gildun into the next room. This is where the majority of this quest takes place, so be prepared to stay here for a while.
When you’re in the room, follow the stairs to your left and head up the stone ramp in the center of the room. If you look up while standing on the railing, you should see another locked door on the upper level.
Aloy can’t reach the climb hold for the door by simply jumping, you’ll need to find a way to boost her.
How to get to the door locked by key and code in the A Friend in the Dark quest in Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores.
To stand on the stone railing in the room and face the locked door to the next level, look to your right Up to you see another train car hidden in the shadows.
Walk here and at the end of the train carriage you should see a railing. Hang on to it and wait for Gildun to join you. Then, once Gildun there, push the wagon until he couldn’t go any further.
Look to your left, an opening to a new area with a Cashier inside should have been revealed.
Take the crate and shoot or push it to the top of the stone ramp in the middle of the room. Then climb on it and jump to the climbing hold to pull yourself up to the locked door.
Once at the door, Aloy will then realize the door needs both a key and a code to unlock it.

Face the locked door and so look to your left. Follow the leads here in the dark and then look to your left Again. You should see another room with hologram displays in it.
In this room, look to your left again and you should see a grill covering a vent. Use your Pullcaster to open the grate, then climb up the vent.
Keep walking through the vent until you drop into the next room.
For the next part, you’ll need Gildun with you, so you need to find a way to get them to where you are.
How to Bring Gildun to Your Level
To do this, stand near the train car at the level you are on and do a Pulse Scan with your Focus. SO, look to your right. You should see some climbing holds which lead to the other side of the room.
Follow the climbing path Up to you go down the other side from the room. Now you should see a small open space connected to the platform you are on and the area will contain a data point.
Scan the data point here and you will find that the door code is 1247.
After that, turn around and get out of this room. You should see a grid covering an object on the edge of the platform are you sure.
Use your Pullcaster to remove the grid of that, and that goes reveal a mount wheel. Walk up there and interact with him to know that this wheel moves the elevator. Wait for Gildun to get on the elevator (the red room on the ground floor in front of you). Once Gildun inside, hold your motion control to the right to make Gildun ascend on your floor.
When Gildun is safely out, let go of the mounting wheel and back up to where they stand. Then together grab the ramp at the back of the train carriage and push it as far as it goes.
How to Climb to the Top of the Wagon in A Friend in the Dark Quest in Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores
Once you can’t push it anymore, you’ll then need to find a way to climb onto the roof of the wagon.
To do this, use your Shieldwing to go down to the lower level and you must grab the box on the stone ramp.
Pull the crate in the elevator and then wait for Aloy to ask Gildun to help her stand up. You will have to wait a few seconds while Gildun climbs up to the wheel of the mount, then they will take you to the next level.
When you’re finally back to the next level, shoot or push the crate until it rests on the rails in front of the wagon. Then, as you did earlier, use the crate to climb.
When you’re on top of the wagon, keep going until you see the climbing holds which lead to a slightly higher area. Pull yourself into the next area and then ignite the Firegleam on your right.
Once the Firegleam has created an opening for you in the next room, enter it and take the key module between. However, be prepared for a fight, as burrowers will invade as soon as you pick it up.
Take out these machines however you see fit, but there’s a Deathbringer gun in the room where you pick up the Key Mod, which can make for a quick fight. Also, don’t worry if you fall back to the lower area, Gildun is still able to use the elevator to get you back up.
Open the locked door
Once the fight is over, return to the locked door For put the key module and code in it. When you do this the door will open to another small area.
Scan the room until you see a data point on the other side of it. SO, stand at this Datapointand look in the opposite direction of this you should see a grill covering another vent on the wall.
Use your Pullcaster to remove the grid And then ride in the Wind. Follow the path until you drop into another area, then examine what you find. Once you have done this, return to Gildun to tell them what you have discovered.
Follow the cutscene and the conversation, then the quest will come to an end.
