Fire Emblem Engage Unit Classes Explained
There’s some crucial information you need to know about how unit classes work in Fire Emblem Engage, even if you’re a veteran of 2019’s Three Houses. The classic weapon triangle is now back, which means that swords work well against axes, axes are excellent against spears, and spears can do quick work for sword users.
With that in mind, you want to make sure you have a varied army when venturing into battle in Fire Emblem Engage. It’s not Three Houses, where you can hit anyone with Byleth and company, so if you use all the spear users in Engage, you’ll be quickly defeated if you’re up against ax wielders.
Keep this in mind when deciding which unit class you want someone to switch to. Taking the protagonist Alear for example, you might want to promote them to a purely sword-based class when changing unit type, or if you don’t have a lot of spear-based elite troops in your army, you might want to change them to a Hero class, specializing in sword and spear categories.
Don’t forget: you can see what weapons a selected class excels at by hovering over it in the “Change Class” menu and looking under the class name. In the screenshot above, for example, we can see that the Swordmaster is excellent at swordplay, represented by the “S” next to the sword symbol, which is the highest rating that a class can get for a weapon.
How to Change Unit Classes in Fire Emblem Engage
Simply put, Fire Emblem Engage doesn’t really tell you how to change unit class. Once a unit reaches level 20, it has effectively reached its level cap, and this is when you need to choose which category you want to promote it to.
To do this, go to the main menu of Fire Emblem Engage by pressing the “+” button when you are in Somniel. Scroll down to “Inventory” and select it, then at the bottom of the next menu you will see an option called “Change class”. This is where you can promote units and change their classes in the future.
There are two levels of classes in Fire Emblem Engage: Basic and Advanced. Base level is what Alear, Alfred, Boucheron, and all your other followers start at at the start of the game, and they will need to reach base level 20 before they can be promoted to an advanced level class.
When you do this, your unit’s level is reset to one. Don’t panic though, as they are now in the upper tier of classes, which means that a level 1 advanced class is still significantly more powerful than a level 20 base class.
If you change your unit’s class to another base level instead of an advanced level, be aware that it will be considerably lower, with its level being reset to level one of the lower level. If you’re going to do this, we highly recommend doing it near the start of Fire Emblem Engage, rather than waiting a dozen in-game hours and rendering a unit useless by resetting its level to one. the basic level.
How to Get Master Seals in Fire Emblem Engage
Yes, unfortunately there is a cost to promote a unit to an advanced level class. Fire Emblem Engage works with Seals to promote units, and this might sound familiar to those who played Fire Emblem Three Houses, which used a very similar system a few years ago.
If you want to promote a unit from basic to advanced, you will need a master sigil for each unit you want to promote. This can be a pretty tough question in some scenarios, because if you have around 10 units to promote out of the base tier, you’ll need the exact corresponding number of Master Seals to do so.
One way to earn Master Seals is by completing paralogue battles related to older heroes in Fire Emblem Engage. Periodically throughout Engage’s story, you’ll see a Paralogue Battle option open up on the overworld map, represented by a glowing purple diamond symbol.
If you manage to do well in these optional battles, you will be rewarded with a Master Seal for each one you complete. Be warned though that these battles are incredibly difficult, not only in the recommended unit level, but also because they often severely limit the number of units you can take into battle with you, in some cases reducing the maximum number. of units to as few as six.
On the other hand, Master Seals are actually available for purchase in Somniel, provided you have the necessary funds. If you head to the Plaza and then to the item shop hosted by Anisse, you’ll find that you can purchase a Master Seal for 2,500 G each. It’s not a cheap method of acquiring Master Seals, but if you’re unlucky with Paralogue Battles, it’s your only option.
Good luck in Fire Emblem Engage!
