Lost in the dunes is a side quest in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom which finds you helping a group of Kara Kara bazaar merchants who have lost something important: their friend!
Ponthos is part of a group of merchants traveling to Gerudo Town in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. After some events at the Kara Kara bazaar, Ponthos got separated from his friends and is now, quite literally, lost in the dunes.
Without further ado, we’re here to show you how to complete the Lost in the Dunes side quest in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

How to start the Lost in the Dunes quest in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Before embarking on this quest, we strongly advise you to complete the Riju quest from Gerudo Town. Even if you don’t complete the quest (although we recommend that you do as it makes this quest easier), you’ll need to complete the part where you defend Kara Kara’s bazaar from an attack by Gibdo.
If you have done the above, you must head to Kara Kara Bazaar. If you haven’t found it already, the bazaar can be found northeast of Gerudo Town, southwest of Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower, and southeast of Gerudo Highlands Scenic Tour.
We have marked its exact location on the map below and the the coordinates of Kara Kara bazaar are (-3269, -2543, 0023).
When you get to the bazaar, you need to find the two merchants outside the general store at (-3272, -2580, 0023).
Speak to either of the merchants and they will inform you that one of them, Ponthos, has been missing since the attack on Gibdo. This is the start of the Lost in the Dunes side quest.

Robsten will then tell you that they saw Ponthos running out of the west exit (which is the closest exit to the trading duo right now).
Exit through the west entrance and look left. Your compass around your minimap should indicate that you are looking south.
You should now see a large rock formation with a small campfire in front.
Head here and you should see a sinkhole with some gear around it (-3357, -2678, 0028).
Jump into the chasm and let it suck you down to the lower level. Once you cross, you should land in an area called ‘Oasis Source’.
Once you land, follow the path forward and you’ll find Ponthos sitting on the ground. Talk to them and find out they can’t find a way out, but don’t worry, you can.
How to save Ponthos in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Before moving forward, we recommend having at least one of the things we’ve listed below:
- Yunobo’s Wise Ability
- Minimum of four flower bombs
- Hammer (can be crafted by fusing a boulder to a melee weapon – there are a few boulders scattered around Ponthos.)
Once you have one of the above, look down the river to the left of Ponthos. You will want to follow it but walk against the current through the first arch/opening.
Once through here, you should see that the next opening is blocked by rocks. Use any of the methods of your choice from the list above to clear the rocks.
In the next area you will see a blocked entrance at the back and one on the right. Head to the one at the back of the area and clear it (should be the one near/over the river).
Then you will come to a slightly larger area. Some stone pebbles can attack you here, but just hit them with a hammer or your chosen rock breaking method.
Keep following the river (against the current) here and you will eventually come to a ladder. If you have already found it, your target is the Kara Kara Bazaar Well.
When you find the ladder, Ponthos will appear and thank you before leaving. Then you need to go back up the ladder to the bazaar and again go find Ponthos with the other merchants outside the general store to claim your reward.
Your reward is the strange orb on the ground next to the trio, which will be important for the quest for the Mysterious Eighth that you can find in Gerudo Town.
That’s it for this quest! If you fancy getting away from the wasteland for a bit, it might be time to tackle Hateno Politics with the Mayoral Election quests. Alternatively, if you want to learn more about cooking delicious meals, take a look at our list of recipes.
